When I lived in Vancouver, a friend once came over with a grocery bag and said she'd bought some food. All that was inside were three cinnamon buns, so I teased her about it and said "I should probably never ask you to buy me some food because then you might come back with a couple of chocolate bars", which led to a discussion about what should be called "food". I wanted to exclude pastry and candy from the definition but she insisted that everything that's edible is food. I guess that technically, she's probably correct. But the whole thing felt more like a sign of us being from different cultures rather than from different language backgrounds. | |
