Oh let me guess the next stereotypical thing that will come up...The chick was not white. [Edited 1/24/06 1:19am] You're cracking me up. Keep rolling those eyes! (And...for the record, the woman was white.) Judging someone for having a Coach handbag is not being narrow-minded It's about being PRACTICAL. A Coach handbag is not a basic human necessity or even a human right. In addition, SHE is not the sole provider for her family...the GOVERNMENT is helping her...and I will say it again...I have NO PROBLEM with people getting assistance if they really need it...but, anyone who can afford a $350 purse or is spending money on luxury items should not be doing so if they are in a financial bind. This is my idea of being financially responsible and my opinion...why get so bent out of shape about it? You're acting like I'm saying "Kill all people who get foodstamps! They all suck!" Which is not what I'm saying or what I believe AT ALL. I'm not a bad person, really and I have had my share of being poor. I'm not rich by any means and grew up in a working-class home. Also, how am I living in a "glass house"? If you're referring to losing all of my possessions in a fire (I didn't have renter's insurance) and friends here offering to help me...well...I've said before and I'll say it again...I am deeply appreciative of all the help people have given me here. My friends here have changed my life and I will forever be grateful to them. Although, when Tackam suggested I register for things I needed...I was afraid it might be used against me and that is one of a few reasons I was against the idea at first. The assistance I've gotten has been used against me a few different times here. [Edited 1/24/06 7:22am] There you go assuming again....I was not even talking about your housefire, but if you want to bitch and moan about that go for it.

notoriousj said:[quote] matt said: Hmmm... what constitutes "receiving government funds"? I (legally) paid no federal income tax for 2000, thanks to the Lifetime Learning Credit. Getting a tax credit is arguably receiving government funds. And those were some pretty significant government funds... literally thousands of dollars. Its not assistance in the same sense as receiving food stamps. Tax rebate checks are provided to anyone who works and in turn overpaid their income tax to the feds. I know you worked while you were in college, as did I. I still reap some small benefits of going to college as in the tax credit I get for all interest paid for my student loans. This is an insentive given to students and graduates as well as the lifetime learning credit. I don't really see some financial aid as assistance, because you have to pay that shit back. Plus the feds in turn make money off of you with the interest rates they charge. Where as with foodstamps you don't have to pay that stuff back to the government. You can argue that college funds and tax breaks are gov assistance just as foodstamps, but they are not. Unfortunately, as a result, I didn't get one of those "tax rebate checks" in 2001. You know, those government funds most adult Americans received that year? I had to wait until I did my tax return the next year to collect those government funds.
Well my parents got the tax credit as they were the primary people paying for my college education. So I did not see the light of day with that credit. The measley 30,000 grand I am paying back to the government is nothing in comparison to what my daddy is paying back to them, now he has to do it all over again in about 7 months for my sister. Now that I think about it, my $54 monthly transit pass... I guess I'm also receiving government funds there, since all public transportation systems in this country are heavily subsidized.
Again these are not gov funds because you are paying to use the service...therefore paying the local transit companies, which in turn gives money to the feds for subsidizing their services. Perhaps my Apple PowerBook G4 should be confiscated... surely that's a "luxury item." I should have to settle for a PC running Windows instead.
Hey hey leave my wonderful sony vio running windows XP outa this

TheCatWoman said: So how is it you date if you don't have a car?
Well... it's been at least a few months since I've had a "date." However, if I need a car for a short period of time, I use a car-sharing program called Flexcar. For an annual fee and an hourly rate, I can reserve a car online or via phone. Fuel and insurance are included, and they now have over 150 cars here in Seattle, parked at various locations. (They've even got a Miata in their fleet.) A good number of the Flexcars are in my neighborhood. In fact, there are two of them on the next block. Owning a car in my neighborhood can be more trouble than it's worth... parking is terrible, most things one needs are within walking distance, and we're well-served by public transportation. (We should even have subway service by 2016.) Also, Seattle is one of the few cities where there isn't a stigma attached to using public transportation. On the rare occasion when I need a car for a longer period of time -- say, a day or more -- then I'll get one from a traditional car rental agency, like Hertz. It's still cheaper than owning a car. I'd say that in an average month, my transportation expenses are about $100... $54 for a transit pass and about $45 for Flexcar use. Oh no, I didn't mean to suggest that it is. In Seattle, the usual transit fare is $1.25 or $1.50, depending upon the time of day. But if you take a taxi, the meter starts at $2.50 as soon as you get in. I simply meant that riding in a taxi isn't necessarily as much of a luxury expense as it might seem to be. She found a practical way to provide for her family and have the handbag she wanted. Who knows maybe she bought it on her credit card...trust me us ghetto ass people can get credit cards and manage them just as well as uppity rich ass people. You are confusing practical with narrow mindedness...because in your post you said There was a woman in front of my sister and I at the grocery store and she had LOADS of WIC coupons and foodstamps...and...was carrying a COACH bag...
I've been working since I was 15 and never had a Coach bag. You were being narrow-minded in the fact that you are prejudging her on the fact that because she has wic coupons then therefore she should not have a coach handbag. You don't know why she has to use wic coupons for her food. Atleast she is providing for her family, Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Oh let me guess the next stereotypical thing that will come up...The chick was not white. [Edited 1/24/06 1:19am] As someone has already stated, the purse could have very well been fake. Oh, if you knew how many stylish and seemingly moneyed New Yorkers carry fake bags! Marina Rust even wrote an article in Vogue at one time about buying a fake Kelly (or was it a Birkin?)... I had a copycat Coach at one time - it was gorgeous! (And no, I'm not putting myself in the category of Rust - far from it!!) But then again... poorer people, oddly enough, often spend real cash on the real thing, whereas wealthier people cut corners... the reasons are manifold. French women of every socio-economic category seem to find a way to carry a nice handbag... the culture demands it. Fascinating discussion! edit for clarity [Edited 1/25/06 0:44am]

She and her family look like the GotRocks. She almost never pays more than ten dollars for anything. She shops at second hand stores, consignment shops, garage sales in summer, outlet mall clearances. She still shops like this even though she and her husband have a good income now. It wouldn't be easy, but I bet you could get a Coach bag in a consignment shop in a "good" neighborhood for a fraction of it's original price. We just bought a beautiful Jessica McClintock dress for my 13 year old niece, never been worn-$230 tags still on for $7 at a consignment shop winter clearance sale. Your sister is an inspiration...and I have loads of respect for her. She needed assistance and got it, but was still practical. And, in my error, I didn't think about being able to buy expensive items at consignment shops, etc. Thanks for pointing that out...maybe that's what the woman at the grocery store did. I've found amazing designer pieces at Goodwill, for that matter... A Dior jacket, Catherine Maladrino fringed skirt (silk in and out), a Michael Kors skirt with the tags still on... As far as consignment goes, I just bought a Lancel attache case for 15 euros... the goods are out there! just have to look.
