Appreication Thread: Food Stamps

Remember hearing this?

"Sorry, but in order to use that high of a note, it has to be right out the book"

Or

"George, here take this and go get me some bread, milk………."

You know 'em, you love 'em, you all grew up with them(not saying you were on it but you know what I mean).

I'm talking about the staple of coming up black…or hood…..or just plain ole Brizzoke.

The Great American FOOD STAMP!!!

Now I don't know what fat, old, jolly azz Craka sat up in DC somewhere and said….

"You know what would save us money in the Welfare System? Instead of sending Checks that these people don't use for things they should, like Food…we could make up a new currency that is only used for Food, and the money we save; we could buy bigger houses and fasted boats and bigger shipments from the Columbians"

Alas, the good ole Food Stamp was born. Some people got them in the mail, others had to go to an office and get there's. Whatever the case, those little stapled booklets had all my Froot Loop and Minute Steak dreams in them. People use to try and front like they didn't get them, but we know the drill. I mean you got 12 friends on your block and 9 of their Mommas hit the Supermarket on the same day?

Nigga please.

Now my situation was like this…I lived with my Grandparents because I felt safer with them. My mom faked the funk and got Welfare on my behalf, but more times than none my grand peeps didn't see any of that monthly government bounty, but every now and then she hit Grand Dukes off with a little stack.

Stores tried to pull that "You can't buy Prepared Food" Shyt. You show me one store in the hood that didn't hook you up with 3 Chicken Wings and a slice of bread for one of those Dolla Stamps?

I use to sneak in my Grandma Pannie Drawer and swipe me some Sour Cream and Onion/Strawberry Soda funds. Besides selling Weed, and anything else you could get from the hood, there were always(and still is) a black market for the Stamps. Everybody knew some chick with 8,836 kids, and got $1,998, 765 a month in food stamps and all she bought was Tuna, Bread, Bologna, Mayo(or Miracle Whip), Cheese, and a big ole Sams Club sized box of Cheerios. All that cost $5, so she sold the rest.

Selling/Buying Food Stamps was like going to the Currency Exchange, some people had so-so rates ($15 for 25)

While others had better rates ($15 for 30)

Then that one girl who did your momma hair in her kitchen ($15 for 40)

Back in the day, we all denied the fact that we were on Food Stamps…That shyt ended the second we got hunger pains. When I first moved to Minneapolis in 92, I shopped at my closet Grocery Store. It had a little hint of hood, but not quite the same flava. Just like clockwork, someone approached me in the aisle and offered their rates. Sometime I had to Jew them down, but for the most part, I locked in on their going rate. No more shame in my game when you got rent to pay now. I get it now Momma.

I use to get mad at people who were just sitting on their arse getting that monthly lunch ticket because they didn't have to go to work, and could sit home and watch Ricki Lake all dayum day. Sometimes I felt sorry for them, that didn't last too long. I use to with that the government make the Booklet 5 feet wide and 10 feet long. That way everyone on earth (and Space) would know you were on Food Stamps and would be so embarrassed, that they get on their feet and do something.

Now we're in the Digital Age and instead of paper, we now have cards that get uploaded with cash and stamps. So it's more discreet now. That is until you see Sheniqua at the checkout and she can't remember her pin number. Now you have that same cat in the aisle selling you stamps, but now you can't just buy them and go. They have to go to the Checkout with you. I just to buy from him too, I just to say, "you don't get any cash until this rings up just fine". Then I give them the loot in the parking lot.

I still chuckle when I'm a store and Wilma Welfare is in front of me and she's got all kinds of Steak, Lobster and Skrimp(yes, Skrimp), and every thing else in the cart says "Quick, Instant, or Ramen", and she calls her son "Aquemini" to come help her with the cart, but he's too busy trying to holla at Suzy Q in the other lane.

Do you guys know anyone who's selling some stamps?

OK, that's what I was talking about. But it's different now; you have to give it to someone that you know is going to give it back so you can get your shit next month!

So, what is this like? A credit card for food? And don't you have to at least show and ID when using your card, to avoid selling them?

Not that I know anything about this stuff....whistling but it's never a problem getting the card and if they don't give it back, you just go in for a replacement one.

Plus, there are always people in line at the grocery store offering to pay for your stuff on their card for cash.

I remember the old men that used to stand outside the corner store and ask all the kids that went by to go in and "bust stamps" for them. He would give us a "dolla stamp" and we would go in and spend only 35 cents (which equaled a honey bun or a bag of chips and 2 nickel candies). Then we come out and give him the change. biggrin good times...

Oh, shut up. Such a tiny fraction of a percent of tax dollars actually goes to programs like welfare and food stamps. If you want to talk about misappropriation of your tax dollars, look at some shit like the oil industry and let the rest of us reminisce in peace.

And about something that was said earlier, XxAxX I know you deleted your post but, I understand what you mean. Honestly there is no real way to stop it and it's not exactly charity. But, I understand what you mean.

Actually here in Missouri they want to cut funds for children and the elderly but do you think they're going to stop taking the same amount of money out of my taxes? There's something wrong with that. Some one selling food stamps (if they aren't doing it to pay bills or other necessities) isn't cool but it still goes to someone else who is working and needs to free up some cash because they work their ass off and would have to pay cash for their's otherwise.

I did have a job lol the only way I could get welfare at the time with food stamps was to work too and go to school. nana

if they are being used to buy food what is the difference? I always got way more food stamps than cash aid, hell for a while I was getting all food stamps and medical no cash at all.
