hey now, I used to be a die hard fan.....and I'm not a redneck There are certainly plenty of exceptions. My niece and her husband watch it, and they are about as far from rednecks as you can get. (Of course, I tease them unmercifully. I tell her that she is on her way to being a trailer-park queen, and I tell him that he should just come out and admit he's all about the cock). Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

This belief is popular in many cultures, including american culture. this belief is changing and more people are becoming openminded about sexuality and making it less of an issue. but it seems to me that the emasculated black screaming queen is a stereotype that the media loves and is hestitant to give up. The flagrant stereotype that exists in the media isn't nearly as prevailant in the real world. However, because of the constant stereotype that is projected by the media, people do automatically equate gay men with not being masculine, don't you see that? It's not like these people hate gay people, they're just responding to what they know and what they know happens to be on TV. Look at the success of brokeback mountain. That movie is about two men who don't fit the media's gay stereotype and people loved it. I bet there are many people who went into that movie with less than clear thoughts about homosexuality and came out of it with a completely different mindset. The media can change people's minds if it wants to but it rarely ever does and I think that this wrestling storyline is an example of that. One of the reasons that i enjoyed the show six feet under as much as i did is because they had a black character who was gay and it wasn't really much of an issue. he wasn't feminine in the least, he was just a man who was trying to work out his relationship with another man. For me, it was refreshing to see a black gay man treated with such respect. If this character was feminine, that would have been fine, too just as long as he was presented as a whole person and not defined solely by his sexuality. All I'm saying is that this wrestling crap fits with the emasculating of the black male in the media. I know that there have been some academic writing on this subject and entire courses about it at certain colleges and universities. It usually seems to fall under a race issue instead of a sexuality issue even though it's both, but whatever. also, homosexualiy in the black community is a huge, ugly issue. I'm not saying that it's all hunky dory in other culture's either, but i'm not speaking of them right now. saying a black man is gay actually can be one of the worst things you can say about him, depending on who you say it to. it could cost him his life. You may want to read up on sexuality in the black community, i think you would find it very interesting and may even spark some of your intellectual threads, which i tend to enjoy reading. You can't take sexuality out of its cultural context, you just can't. and i get the feeling that you don't really understand the culture that clearly. Please don't take it as an insult, it's just the impression that i'm getting. Well, now that you've explained yourself more clearly, I see your point. Don't agree, but I understand where you are coming from. As for the wrasslin' thing, I don't watch it, so I can't say how it will be treated. If they make him a major badass who kicks all the straight white boy's asses, then it may be a complete reversal of the stereotype. Hell, I think wrasslin' is nothing but a repressed homosexual "sport" anyway. Buncha big, beefy guys are all oiled up and jumping on each other? Sounds pretty gay to me! wrestling is a repressed homosexual sport. please don't think that i believe that a gay man is not a real man. as i tried to explain, it is not my belief but it is the stereotype that is put out there more often than not and i don't see this as helping matters. i feel like it's akin to 'friends' casting a main character who is black but also a ghetto fabulous crackhead with 14 kids, it doesn't help anything.

Believe me, I'm not trying to say that's what you think. I guess because my whole life I've been around gay and gay-friendly people I've had very little exposure to true homophobia or even really the way it's handled by the general public and the media. I admit that I've sort of lived in a bubble in this regard, so I have a hard time wrapping my mind around why being falsely accused of being gay is such a big deal to some people. I've got to go offline now, so I'll have to reply to your other post later. you really need to step out of your bubble, kiddo. there's a pretty harsh world out there that needs changing and the more help, the better.
