A techie question.. (its a goodun!)

Hi guys,

Need help. CD drive to my Sony Vaio Laptop has stopped doing two funtions...

it WONT play dvd's like it used to.

it WONT burn cd's like it used to.

HOWEVER-

it STILL plays audio CD's

it STILL allows me to rip music onto the hardrive.

SO- has anyone ever encountered this conundrum b4?

I thought it was completely gone, only to find it still plays and rips audio...

CD burning is what I really want to do, but Windows Media PLayer 10, AND Nero, will NOT burn cds anymore. It converts the mp3's, then as soon as it trys to burn.. thats it.. it just cant do it. So unlikey a software issue?

How can this happen? if the laser has gone, how come it still plays audio and allows me to RIP? Wierd. I have tried cleaning the lens etc... just dont know what to do.

A new cd-drive for a laptop is v expensive. Any ideas b4 i buy a plug and play cd drive, just so I can continue burning (external so its cheaper)

Many thanks!

ghostbusters, star trek, the bible, who knows?

but seriously, how long you had it? can't you just take it back to the place you bought it and say "fix it" ?

Seriously, is your laptop still under warranty? If so, you really oughta take it in. I have never heard of a drive acting like that before confuse

a computer system reconizes devices such as rom drives. They only alow commands to be sent to those drives that the operation system reconizes those devices as being able to accomplish. It would seem to me that your system in not reconizing your device as such a dvd cdw. You would need go into your systems folder and reconfigure the way the device is reconized. A quick fix might be to update your driver, as that is what is mostlike crupted.

to avoid this in the future stop visiting those porn websites.

moreover and however, the fact that someone might have wrote to a system file such as that seems to sudgest you have a trojan. What I would do is reformat the entire system. You are actually suposed to reformat at least once a year.
