Bird Flu: The Answer? Okay, so here's what happened...
Talking to a housemate last night, I suddenly hit upon the answer to rid us all of bird flu... KILL ALL BIRDS! Okay, I'm joking (Natisse!) but it did set me wondering: If we did eradicate all birds, what would be the outcome? ~ more worms ~ less nests ~ er, and the whole eco system would collapse I think I'll stick to less challenging topics next time.

I'd really miss my roast chicken dinners if someone takes up this proposal.

Things I wouldn't miss about birds:
~ droppings ~ seagulls' squeals ~ their beady little eyes ~ their 'I can fly, look at me!' arrogance ~ loads of things

Interesting question that. Wiping out all birds would no doubt result in unpredictable changes to the entire ecology of earth. We could attempt to predict what might happen, but I'm not sure we could ever take everything into account. The knock-on effects could not be known, it could even result in worse pandemics caused by uncontrolled populations of any species which no longer had a natural predator had they all been wiped out. I don't think - even if it becomes necessary - that killing all birds is possible. The only effective way to achieve that would be with, I don't know, some sort of avian virus, perhaps ? Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

the consumption of poultry has nothing to do with the risk of picking up avian flu

sure it does if you buy the dead chicken at the market and handle its carcass while preparing and before consuming it. this is how the children in turkey were infected. they were 'playing' with severed chicken heads. look it up

Really? I mean, I know you're in a diff part of Asia but don't you at least feel a little bit... about it? I was laughing last night cos this tv channel has a competition where you can win a trip to..... Turkey! Nobody wants to go there much at the moment Poor Turkish people though, their fowl are a big part of their lives what with bringing eggs and meat. [Edited 1/12/06 7:37am]
