ewww! Discovery of body on I-95 snarls rush-hour traffic
Northbound portion of highway closed as police conduct investigation By Melissa Harris Sun Reporter Originally published January 9, 2006, 1:50 PM EST Multiple cars struck a body on northbound Interstate 95 around 4:30 a.m. today, spreading body parts across the roadway and backing up traffic for miles. Northbound Interstate 95 lanes opened around 1 p.m. today. 1st Sgt. Russell Newell said that state police investigators have been unable to determine the victim's sex or race, and members of the Maryland State Police's training academy scoured the highway for remains. Newell said that troopers couldn't open the interstate until every piece of evidence is collected from the scene, causing the northbound lanes to be shut down for more than seven hours. Dave Buck, a spokesman for the State Highway Administration, said that the back-up on I-95 never reached beyond a few miles, but that one of the routes used to redirect traffic was clogged with another accident at Route 175 and Route 108 in Howard County. He also said that traffic was heavy on U.S. 1. Buck said that about 200,000 cars travel on I-95 every morning, and that police rerouted tens-of-thousands of them. Troopers do not know how the victim's body entered the road between Route 100 and Route 175. Newell said that multiple cars hit the body without stopping. So far, however, only one person who hit the body has been interviewed. "I'm sure that there are other people out there who didn't realize that they witnessed something," Newell said. "It was dark, and they probably thought they hit a bump, pot hole or a deer."
