Spider-Man 3 News!!! Hello fellow geeks (and if you even clicked on this thread, you are one of us! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!!), here's a tidbit from Ain't It Cool News about a major character from the Spidey mythos coming to the big screen:

Hey True Believers, Harry Knowles here with some Marvel news to really marvel about. Now, it might be backwards as hell... how Sam Raimi's done this, but he seems intent on doing it. Sam is gonna bring the most beloved character in the history of SPIDER-MAN into the cinematic fold. That's right. As rumors of the second coming of the Green Goblin mount... From screen right enters... GWEN STACY!!! 
When Avi Arad called me this morning to discuss the HULK sequel - he let slip that he was intent on calling me today anyway to drop this megabomb of coolnews. He knew that I would friggin love this like no tomorrow! For me, Gwen Stacy is the very embodiment of YOUNG LOVE. She is that teenage girl that dreamt of all those tomorrows that she'd never live. She was the damsel that wasn't saved. Right when Spidey was getting cocky about web-slinging and soul-saving... he lost another. This one, within his own soul. For serious comics fans, the Gwen Stacy story is sacred text. It is, along with the coming of Galactus - the single greatest Superhero arc of the Silver Age. And it was the exact opposite of that story. FF 48, 49 and 50 were about the story cosmic, this was about the story intimate. As of about an hour ago, the contract was signed. Sam Raimi and Avi Arad have their sweetheart. They've cast young Bryce Howard, yes, Ron Howard's daughter - the one playing the title character in M Night's next film. Bryce is just about the hottest young emerging talent out there right now - and she is, like her father once was, a redhead... but like Ron - she's going b... no, not bald, but BLONDE - hopefully Platinum Blonde for the role of Gwen Stacy. Avi wouldn't tell me if Bryce was signed for one or two pictures. But the key for me was always Gwen's eyes. She had amazing, captivating grey-blue newsprint eyes. Here's the photo Avi sent me, with the note, "Of course she will be blonde..." 
Sam's been stellar so far - and this is definitely the right step to head in. Now - if only he'd kill Mary Jane instead. Heh. So, they cast a blonde to play a redhead, and now a redhead to play a blonde? Personally, I'm intrigued by the addition of Gwen. Will she meet the same fate as her comic counterpart?

Honestly, at this stage in the game, I'd much prefer the introduction of Felicia Hardy for an effective love triangle. Gwen doesn't add anything at this point. Goblin's dead. Uncle Ben is dead. Felicia is at least powerful and fucking hot. She could be a villain and a love interest. You can do more with her. Gwen Stacy's pretty borin. | |

The average person is going to be better able to relate to a Gwen Stacy interfering in Peter and MJ's relationship than a Felicia Hardy. The average person can relate, of course. But it'll make MJ's position that much more relatable when Pete starts diggin on a hot version of Paris Hilton instead of Gwen who's just kinda normal. Felicia's a ridiculously fine heiress in her out-of-tights life. So that in and of itself is more interesting then Gwen. Plus the family secret of how her dad came to be so damn rich. Felicia's a better, more rounded (heh) character. That's why she's alive and Gwen's dead, but got knocked up by the Green Goblin and is now turnin up with adult superpowered spawn post-mortem. I have read Spiderman since I was about 7...Gwen is not more interesting than Felicia....Her only claim to fame is how she died and what it did to Peter and Norman. She is right up there with all of the other chicks that Peter was interested in. Because Felicia was the Black Cat that adds a deeper story. My thing is they already did the whole throw a girl Peter loves off the brigde thing with MJ in the first movie...I assumed that was them merging the Gwen thing with MJ. And since she is a major part of Spidey lore then why wasn't she introduced BEFORE MJ or during...Felicia at least tries to tempt Spiderman and Peter...where it would be out of character for Peter to even think about kicking MJ to the curb for Gwen especially if they are just introducing her...and she is no temptress or maybe that is how they plan on writting her? clever clever quotation - attention getting quote - sad yet witty remark - look at me! I'm not familar with the Gwen Stacey story but it sounds really cool! Now I really look forward to this new one. You know how I always liked and have been buying the series of..,? "Black Cat"...I probably like her because she is super hot. Please bring her into the story soon. This franchaise can really go on forever, can't it? | |

I fell in love with Felicia when Kevin Smith started writin her. Before that, I couldn't relate to her. Now, she's somebody I'd love to see in the movies, played by none other than Scarlett Johannsen.

Gwen is the girl Peter Parker loved and probably still loves more than Mary Jane. He was going to marry her and the Green Goblin kidnapped her to lure Spiderman to the Brooklyn Bridge. He then threw Gwen off the bridge (like he did MJ in the first Spidey movie) Spidey managed to shoot a web to catch her but upon snagging her and the impact of stopping so suddenly her neck broke. Spidey then went to go kill the Green Goblin but Goblin cause he is an assclown and chose to send his glider into his own chest in an attempt to kill Spidey. The ramifications of her death have been felt to this day. Though I must add Marvel has chosen to cheapen the whole storyline by adding a lot fluff and crap to the Gwen story in recent years. Have you been reading the new Black Cat series? She has her fans  Her character is essentially to be what catwoman is to Batman...But with a Spidey twist. When I first heard that they were doing the Gwen Stacy story, my FIRST thought was; "I hope that they don't actually do the bridge scene."

Well, I too have read Spidey for most of my life (in fact, I've been picking up Spidey comics since looooong before I could even read) and I love Gwen. Felicia is a Catwoman rip-off. Don't get me wrong, I like Felicia, but have no desire to see her in a film. Gwen is the girl that Peter loved with all his heart, and he had to watch her die. As for the whole bridge scene, don't you think they could tie it into the first film? If Harry become the next Goblin, wouldn't it make sense for him to try to revisit where his father was defeated? To possibly "correct" his father's mistake? It would have a major dramatic impact if Harry is able to kill the woman Peter loves, and it would take those unfamiliar with the character's history by surprise. If Gwen was killed, it would be rather jarring to those expecting the exact same outcome as the first film.

The only villian that has been confirmed is Sandman, played by Thomas Hayden Church. Topher Grace is also suppossed to be playing a villian Kirsten Dunst stated in an interview that she thought Grace was playing Venom, although it was later revelealed that she had only heard the same rumours as everyone else. She had yet to read a script at that point. It is doubtful that he is Venom, as Raimi has stated several times that he hates the character. Another rumour (and one I think has more credibility) is that Grace is actually playing Electro. Of course, we will have to wait and see if Harry takes up the mantle of the Goblin in this one. Yet another rumour is that Raimi actually plans to film 3 AND 4 at the same time, and that some of these casting choices aren't for the same film.

I do agree with Sin though, Gwen (as the love interest) came before MJ in the comic continuity, so to introduce her now as another love in the movie seems a little forced. Oh well....let's just wait and hope that the movies continue to be good adaptations. | |

When everyone got their memories back and realized what had happened, Peter was really messed up. I really enjoyed that about the House of M... It was cool to see something that shook Peter to the point he wanted to kill Magneto and all his family. If you get the new Son of Magneto book featuring Quicksilver Spidey runs into Pietro (who now has no powers) And pretty much dangles him off a roof threatening to kill him.
