A Tribute to Comic Artist Alex Ross

I've done a thread on my LEAST favorite comic artist (Rob Liefeld), but it is time to share some love with some of the greats. First up, I'm paying tribute to Alex Ross, an artist who has a truly distinctive style in the comic medium:

You've got excellent taste Jedi. My interest in comics has always been an artistic one. Going to the comic book store is like visiting an art gallery. I grew up drawing from comics and always dreamed of having some art published by DC. When I started doing photo-realistic drawings in the 80's, I never thought the industry would accept realistic drawings of Superman and Batman.

Alex Ross proved me wrong, and has single-handedly reignited interest in comics and graphic novels. He is very well repected and deservedly so. He is one of the greatest artists, as well as the greatest watercolor painter I've ever seen, in our lifetime (As well as Steve Hanks). And he paints my favorite subjects, as well as inspires me to continue my art.

He is truly amazing. I'm enjoying the crap out of his Justice series right now.

Of course, I think my favorite work of his is Kingdom Come. Alex Ross art with an incredible Mark Waid story!

I have several of those prints that used to hang in my apartment when I was single. I'm thinking of decorating the kid's playroom with them! I've got a few Justice League ones, as well as a Marvel collage, a Battle of the Planets print, his take on the cover of Fantastic Four #1 and a Crisis on Multiple Earths print featuring the JLA/JSA.

I am enjoying Justice as well, but this bi-monthly thing is annoying. The action figures to coincide with the comics are INCREDIBLE!

Kingdom Come is untouchable... it is the pinnacle of graphic novels, and will always be one of my favorites. Don't forget... the story was conceived completely by Alex Ross. DC brought in Mark Waid to fine tune it.

If I remember correctly, Alex and Mark had some fueds over the story and some of Mark's 'additions.' In the "Apocrypha" part of the combined books, he painted him and Mark arguing, behind Clark, Bruce, and Princess Diana's conversation. Alex is really yelling at him.

Ross is amazing. I remember bein blown away by the Marvel masterpieces collection as a kid and thinkin Joe Jusko and the Hildebrants were gods for bein able to bring the characters to photorealism. Then I saw Kingdom Come and I went Oh. Oh my. eek

You are absolutely right. Waid was brought in to make it a little more cohesive, and to bring the dialogue up to snuff. He's a brilliant writer, and Alex is pretty headstrong, so it's natural that there would be tension. Still, I think the story benefitted from having Mark's involvement. It wound up being a masterpiece, very bit as brilliant as The Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen (but with better artwork).

Ross, about to turn 36 this month, he's two years younger than I am.
