I don't really remember my grandmother using any other names for people besides honky, chink, and wetback when I stayed with her. My mother and I had a discussion about it and she felt that, because of era in time in which she grew up and the many things in our history, that black people could not be racist. It's justified from the horrible things that we have experienced at the hands of whites. As far as the things said about Asians and Latinos, that too came from bad experiences with the way they treated blacks. She went on to tell me that she would rather see me with a woman that a white guy because he would always see me as a nigger. My mother's side isn't homophobic btw. In fact my grandmother may have been bisexual and my uncle is gay.
I understand how a someone like my Great Grandmother who is part Cherokee (and heard stories about the Trail Of Tears and marched with Dr King), my Grandmother (who never let my mom or uncles drink in the "blacks only" fountains and risked being beaten or jailed for it), and Mother (who was hosed down with fire hoses along with other students during a protest) can harbour bad feelings and become bigoted. You really cannot tell someone who has been through a lot to just get over it. But isn't that eveyone's reason for it? Fear, bitterness and anger? It still isn't right. I really didn't get the stuff about Asians and Latinos  I almost married a man who happened to be white early last year. My mom was glad he made me happy and loved him to death. Both my granny and my grandmother had passed on by then. The bottom line for my mom was that she loved me and wanted to see me happy despite whatever she may have said in the past or experienced. She also appreciated the fact that because of the things that she went through... I didn't have to. Shake....shake, shake, shake. | |

I have family members that are bigots. My dad changed a lot after he met all my friends.
What pisses me off is when people tell me they are not bigoted BUT they still say stuff about other races, just not my race. It's like FUCK!! I tell them that it hurts me just as much if they say something derogatory about someone who's Asian, Middle Eastern or any other race. This is a really sensitive subject for me. I think this is the only subject that makes me feel a little violent. M MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop!
