There are loads of good options and it pretty much comes down to personal preference....
I love Ipods but loads of people hate em. It just got a 60gb video after having a 30gb photo and the new one knocks spots off the old one....and you are not limited to headphones....all mp3's can play via any stereo with a 3.5mm headphone jack to phono lead.
Have fun mate!

hmmm
1500 cd's avering 45 minutes is 67500 minutes of music.
If you encode with 128 kb/s to mp3 it's 0.77 MB a minute.
With 67500 minutes you'll need 51975 MB, thats approx 50 GB of harddisk space

So my personal favourite brand is out then because the Iriver is only available up to 20GB.

What is left (to my knowledge)
iPod 60GB: 439 euros
Creative Nomad Zen Xtra 60GB: 400 euros
iAudio X5 60GB: 475 euros
Archos AV500 or AV700 100GB: 650-800 euros

Plus was IstenSzek said.

Sure you don't want that shipping costs?

Oh, afterthought. If your computer mate is up to it, you can buy a decent computer harddisk (Maxtor DiamondMax plus of 80 GB) for 60 euros. Let your buddy attach it to his PC, download your mp3s and thake your HD with you. Let them know at customs though!
You don't scare me; i got kids

Anxiety

i have a creative labs nomad jukebox that holds 40gb. i bought it early last year and i've yet to have a problem with it. they're cheaper than iPods and i know you can buy nomads with more memory than the one i have. the only down side to one of these is that they're not compatible with all the fancy speaker/charger docks available for iPods, and i still haven't figured out how to load tracks directly from iTunes to my nomad without having to burn a CD first...but if that doesn't bother you, i'd go with a nomad. nod

also, the file manager software that comes with the nomad is good stuff - very simple to use and very dependable.
