Let's ease up on the white guys in dreads...
For sure, straight hair that's in the process of locking looks far more crappy than kinky -- it's stringy, ratted and often caked because it is more likely to require a "locking" agent (bee's wax, pomade, etc.). But when it finally locks, it can look very cool. And white people who lock their hair have a certain advantage: While kinky hair locks much faster, easier and tighter; straight hair offers up length much faster -- so there's less a period of walking around with little, crazy-looking "dreadlets."
I had a white pal in undergrad who locked his hair. He looked horrible for a few months, but when his locks finally took, he had some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. He was a toehead, and his locks looked like rays of golden sunlight cascading from his head. And he always kept them clean and neat. They can work, if you have the right look and personality.
