You're given $1,000,000

... with the proviso that 50% must go to charity.

Which charity or charities will get your money and why?

I don't trust charities.....if I could track every penny to the recipients...probably UNICEF.

There are a lot of charities out there who make a huge difference.

I would give to the following charities:

WSPA (www.wspa.org.uk)They are often the first animal welfare charity to get involved in helping animals in areas of crisis. They were the orgnisation who discovered that the animals in Afghanistan zoo were starving and they have helped in various disaster situations around the world, including the Tsunami and Katrina. At the moment, as well as the relief work they perform, they are trying to stop bear baiting, bear farming in China, bullfighting in Spain, bushmeat snaring, cruel commercial whaling practices, dancing bears and are trying to improve the respect given to all sentient beings worldwide.

The Railway Children (www.railwaychildren.org.uk) I find it heartbreaking that so many of the world's children have so little. This is a charity that is very close to my heart and supports children who ride the railways or live in stations and who try to make a living by picking up rubbish and recycling it, or finding food left by passengers. Many are orphans or runaways and have no other place to go.

SPANA (www.spana.org) Another animal charity whose aim is to save animals from neglect and cruelty in some of the world's poorest regions. They provide veterinary care and aim to educate people on animal welfare.

I trust your judgement, K...hug...

...but, I admit I'm a 'see it to believe it' kinda lady. I wish I could do the Angelina Jolie thing, or be there to see that these organizations are doing with their funding exactly what it is they all promise to be doing...

I suppose my only true comfort with being at "arms length" is that things would be "worse" for the people and animals around the world if these different charities were NOT living up to their promises in some form or fashion.

No disrespect rose

Save the Children and the NSPCC, because children need our help and should be protected and Centrepoint, a charity that helps young homeless people.

None taken.
All registered charities in the UK are obliged to make their accounts public. I have faith in the ones I've mentioned above, and many others.

I would create a scholarship in my grandmother's name.
I'd buy computers and equipment for the Boys and Girls Club of SE Michigan.
I'd buy clothes and food for people who are sick, shut-in and impoverished.
