Growing up, we usually didnt eat breakfast because on Christmas Eve we'd have a massive dinner with tons of extended family and we'd still be full from the night b4. We would pretty much spend the entire morning and early afternoon opening presents. No one wanted to eat too much because Christmas dinner was always a huge deal. I guess coffee or something, but there was no set breakfast menu.

My old college prof loved malt, anything malt! He used to salivate in class when telling us about it.

Crimbo morning brekkie was a bowl of Shreddies with splashes of whisky eek

Top fella he was lol

Cheese eggs and pancakes.

(And leftover broccoli rabe and fried peppers and onions on the side for me, because I'm the only one with taste.)

This year Christmas was at my house and I wanted to do something simple like porridge and fruit salad but I got outvoted by the men in the family who all wanted a cooked English breakfast. In the end I cooked sausages, bacon, toast, eggs and mushrooms for the meat eaters. My niece and I had mushrooms and toast.

grits - I've had them before but I can't remember which ones they were.

Are grits the mushy thing that looks like opaque porridge and kind of tastes of savoury semolina?

So can I, but that sounds like an apt description. I like to cook them with extra water (don't like them when they taste, uh, gritty), some Goya Adobo instead of salt, and use lots of butter and sometimes cheese. Cheese grits with fried eggs and slices of fried ripe tomato...good goddess, my mouth is literally watering as I type it!

biggrin

We don't have grits in England. I think I've eaten them because I remember seeing them somewhere in the Caribbean and I'm sure I would've tried them. I just can't remember what they were.

hey there's a pic! - I didn't see it the first time round. That's exactly what I can remember eating.

I didn't really get the point of "grits" but it sounds like you can add things to them, like FunkMistress said. Do you tend to eat it like hash browns, as a side dish?

I like mine kinda thick with butter, salt, pepper. If I have cheese, bacon, or sausage at the the time, then I like mixing little bits of that in it. It's almost like the loaded baked potatoe. giggle When I eat them for dinner, I'll normally eat them with fish, shrimp,or salmon patties.

You can, or you can just have a bowl of them like oatmeal with butter and syrup.

Most people eat it as a side dish. You'd be amazed at all the shit people put in their grits.....what I like is simple compared to what others like in theirs. I never got why people put ketchup in theirs.....different strokes I just. smile

I hate peppers and onions lol I like using onion powder for flavor when I make salmon patties, but I hate actual onions. wacky I'm the same way with ketchup....I could eat ketchup on a lot of foods, but I hate tomatoes.
