Were you ever the School Prom King or Queen?

No.

However, the band at my senior prom played "Darling Nikki" (uncensored), which was perhaps the highlight of the evening. They couldn't do the guitar solo or backwards message at the end, though. sad

I recently had to transcribe a full interview of Jesse and I swear, his accent is thick! It was a bit of a challenge figuring out what he was saying.

Yeah, I've met him a few times in the course of my career. Always a surreal experience.

I was impressed with his thoughts though. He goes a lot deeper than "Keep hope alive".

I'm going to get something off my chest.

I grew up very poor. I rode the bus to school and sat alone. I befriended a "cool" kid my freshman year and felt "acceptable" by mere association. One day, while riding the bus to school, another classmate asked, "What's it like in the popular crowd?" I wasn't a member of said crowd, but felt honored to be considered as much. I went on and on about this girl and that girl - all positive, mind you - recalling who told the funniest jokes, who had the clearest skin, the prettiest hair, how they all shopped at Benetton (Benetton!) and wore Esprit and Guess. Another bus rider - and a true founder of the in-crowd - overheard bits and pieces of my tale and went to each and every person I'd mentioned, telling them how I was talking about them "behind their backs!" on the way to school. Every one of them shunned me and I was alone. Alone the rest of that year, alone my sophomore year, and alone for a large piece of my junior year, until I regained a modicum of dignity and found a new group of friends who hadn’t yet heard that I was a “backbiting bitch”.

This bus riding in-crowd member was named Alison and I shall never forget her.

As senior year came to a close, it was time to nominate the Prom King and Queen. I was asked to bring the votes (little pieces of folded paper held in a plastic bowl) for my homeroom to the office, where they were to be tallied. On my way, I stopped at the restroom. I slithered into a stall and unfolded every piece of paper held by that plastic bowl. Each time I read Alison’s name, I took that piece of paper and flushed it. I saw one vote bearing my name and, as a way to absolve myself, I flushed that piece of paper, too.

Voting results were announced during fourth period that day. BOTH Alison and I had been nominated (clearly, my attempts at foiling the outcome made no impact). Guilt got to me. I walked to the principal's office and dropped out of the competition. (I wouldn't - and didn't deserve to - win anyhow).

Come the night of the coronation, I sat in the front row and shouted "ABA!! ABA!!" over and over (this stood for "Anyone but Alison"). She didn’t win. I went home happy that night.

No. Had too many other things going on at the time.

I was however involved in just about everything else (non sports) at school. Drama club/production team, Forensics (solo acting), Debate, Dance team, Peer mediator and mentor... I just crashed all the other club's pictures. cool

Yeah, but Jesse reminds me of a batter who swings hard at everything that crosses the plate. He's bright, a charmer and can sermonize with the best of them. But the opportunistic thing always overshadows everything else he brings to the table.

Yeah, I can see that. I was surprised and disappointed when he jumped on the Terry Schiavo bandwagon. That struck me as completely ridiculous.
