Christmas and divorce

My parents have been divorced since forever and for as long as I can remember, Christmas has been a hellish turf war over who gets to spend time with me. Christmas does not hold very many happy memories for me and I have publicly stated many times that I hate this holiday.

This year I have finally had enough. I'm not five years old anymore, I'm about to turn 25 and I've decided to lay down some ground rules for my parents so that Christmas can be a happy holiday for me and both of my families.

I've pretty much already discussed this with my mom and I'm going to talk to my dad about it tomorrow. I'm scared to death but I have to do this. I'm tired of Christmas being insane and depressing every single year.

Wish me luck!

I'm sorry about all this, Jazz. I hope you managed to reach an understanding with your folks.

Well, I spoke with my dad about it this morning and he seemed okay with it. Both my parnts seem alright with it but I'm afraid that next year they'll try and use my words against me so that they can make each other miserable.

The biggestthing that's come out of this is that I've finally realized that I'm an adult, a real adult, and if my parents won't deal with me on that level then they will probably just not see much of me. I've already started to set limits with them and they seem to be responding well. As much as my parents did contribute to my Christmas misery, my mindset is a large part of what made things so bad.

Hopefully, in the new year I'll be able to maintain my change in attitude.
