Santa's elves

I mean they aren't even real elves, are they? They're rather dwarves or gnomes if you want to be exact about it. Elves are much taller, have longer hair and are good at handling crossbows and healing magic. I think Santa's little helpers would have little problem at handling a +2 long sword. Are they even proper vegans?
