I meet friends a couple nights a week to have coffee at the local mall. We always go to the same coffee shop. Normally, all goes well..

Last night was horrible, as we sat down, it began -- a distant grating sound of a young child crying. The crying became louder and louder. We all wondered if the child was hurt -- the crying had been transformed in to a high pitched, ear splitting tantrum. The child was about six. He was walking behind his mother just screaming at the top of his lungs, "I want a toy, I want a toy!" His face was so red I thought he was going to pass out.

The mother paid him no attention... she walked into the coffee shop, odered a coffee and sat at the table next to us. The child was now sprawled out on the floor continuing his raging tantrum.

The mother sat quietly as if she heard nothing. Sher drank her coffee slowly, as the child pounded the floor with his fists. When she finished her coffee, she walked out of the cofffee shop and the child followed crying all the way.


I looked up at my group of friends and said "... makes you want kids, doesn't it?"

They looked at me with a blenk stare. I went home with a headache.

Ahh... the joys of Christmas.

Ah, the joys of christmas. My wife made me go to the mall yesterday. The mall was packed. Loud people pushing through crouds of other loud people. Isn't this holiday suposed to bring out the best in people?

I am sure that child will get that "toy" for christmas from "santa". That mother mostlikely took her wild brat there to see what toys would create such a responce as to know what to buy later.

What I might have done is pick up my cellphone and pretend to dial. I would have spoken very loudly and said something like this.

"Hello? Yes I need to speak to santa claws. Sure I will hold. (wait a second) Yeah santa? Hi this is Michael. Yes I am good thank you. I have a very bad child to report. Yes he's acting very naughty..."

i don't celebrate xmas, but that has happened to me before with my 3yr old. i tell her she can't have that certain toy and she throws a tantrum. i tell her that crying isn't going to get her anywhere, warn her that she needs to be quiet. she's usually really good about stuff like that, but if the tantrum continues you just about have to ignore it. can't let your kid know that it's affecting you or they'll throw a tantrum every time they want anything. my girl has begun to understand that once i say "i've already answered" she's not going to change my mind, and the tantrums run out fast.

if this 6 yr old was still throwing a tantrum after walking through the mall, and sitting for a cup of coffee, it makes me wonder if that mom has not stuck to her guns in the past.

Do ya'll know what my mom would've done to me if i showed my ass like that? She would've called children services and the FBI ahead of time just to let them know where to find my body. Trish didn't play THAT shit. There's no such thing as christmas anyway.

i'm afraid to spank my daughter in public. i never swat her more than twice, but i've still gotten dirty looks from people. my mom spanked me when i was little, and i've never resented her for it. she always (and i always) talked to me and explained why i was being punished and made sure i understood first. nowadays there are people who would call child protective services for slapping a child on the hand.
