Have a look at the bottom of your screen and you should see a icon of a speaker. Double click on that and it will bring up the sound levels. You can then uncheck the mute function.

Go to "start". hold down and open up the task bar. Look for "find". This will open up a search box to find files on the computer. Type in "volume control" and click search. It may bring up a whole lot of stuff, but look through them and see a file that actually says "volume control". Double click on this and that should bring up the speaker volume control.

I'd say your speakers are busted. You can get cheap speaker now days from anywhere. But I would first pop in some headphones to see if that works. If it does...then it's the speakers. . Also, make sure all sound levels are turned up especially Volume Control and Wave.
You may have an issue with the sound card itself. If you're using Windows XP, go to "Control Panel", then click on the icon for "System", go to the "Hardware" tab, click on the "Device Manager" button, and check the sound controller devices to make sure they all state that they are functioning normally.
