Now i've been on my own for about a year now and i've just discovered my love for cooking. So I go to my mom and ask for the recipe for Baked Macaroni, and she tells me:

"You need an egg, some mild and sharp cheese, evaporated milks, and regular milk.. OH! And the macaroni."

"...how much should i put in of each?"

"You'll know it's right."

And she says that like i've been cooking for years. So now i'm all over the internet looking for a soul food recipe website with no luck. I even googled "black people cooking" and this shit came up:


So i'm gonna play it by gut this time time. But why don't black people use measuring cups? We even had some in the house when i was growing up but all those bitches did was collect dust.

Ummm... I'm not black, but maybe I should be. I cook this way too, sometimes with cooking. Everyone loves my food.

the ingreedents are diffrent. Some squash are less sweet then other. some salts are more salty. some beef is more filling, or packed thighter so it goes a longer way. Learning to cook with soul, requires an understanding of what the soul needs and how it interacts with the substances you think of as food.

The main ingredient is love after all. That love is seen by the amouth of time you are willing to put into the dish to make it perfect.

I never knew it, but my mom is all kinda black. She never uses measuring cups. In fact, she gives me the same line about "You'll know it's right," when I ask for amounts.

Measuring is very important. And I believe it was the Joy of Cooking that taught folks to top off their measurements with a knife so they're exact.

Maybe when you know what you're doing you can do it without measuring. Just like anything, it helps to know the rules before you break them.

my dad does sometimes, but usually that's whenever he's making desserts or somethin along that line. but yeah, anything else he cooks i've never seen 'im use any measuring cups. my grandma taught 'im how to cook, and i don't think she ever used any sorta proper measuring methods.
