disbelief lhmj...i wish metro transit here in mpls had a friggin surplus when they went on strike a couple summers ago. after it was over they cut a bunch of bus routes, too...plus they raised the fare by 25 cents (2nd time the fare was raised in the 4 years i've lived here).

yeah, they're raising the fare here, too. i guess at some point it'll have to reach a plateau. shrug

This is craziness but i still love nyc.

yeah...i feel for ya'll guys. hug

p.s. what does lhmj mean? confuse

I took the LIRR into work in Manhattan today instead of the E train which I usually use. The actual train ride to Penn station (from Kew Gardens) was only 15 minutes! The drawback of course was I had to stand on line outside for 2.5 hours (in 25-30F weather) to get a ticket for the train. sad

I ran him down and took his lunch money.

Anyway...I don't know why they didn't accept that last offer. It seemed pretty good. I think public opinion is turning against the union. Plus the parent union announced they weren't supporting the strike so the TWU will have to pay all those fines themselves.

shrug

It wasn't bad driving into Manhattan. There were less cars on the road than I expected and I had no problems parking in Manhattan and The Bronx where I'm at. I passed by striking workers at the 207th St train yard and the 146th St bus depot and Lenox Train yard in front of my Mom's house. I made it a point to leave before rush hour started and that wasn't bad either.

They are saying that this strike could last for several days. If the strike goes on for a week, I heard NYC could lose over $1 billion dollars. I hope the MTA and the TWU can get it together real soon.

Usually I'm all for "damn the man" and "fight the power", but in this situation my patience is wearing quite thin. As my earlier post stated, the average salary for bus drivers & train conductors isn't that low...even by NY standards. Add to that the fact that they get to retire at age 55, they don't have to pay anything for health insurance, they get free rides on the MTA and they were asking for an 8% salary increase every year for the next three years (I'll be LUCKY if I get 3% cost of living) and I really don't have that much sympathy or support for their cause. The people who can make the difference for the workers are not the ones suffering and having to walk/hitch hike/wait 2+ hours in the cold. You think upper management takes the subway? I doubt it...they have car services & drivers for that.

i was able to get to port authority easily enough today but i can't imagine if this had happened when i ws still living and working in new york.

i was out in brooklyn back then so it probably would have been a day off without pay for me and tons of dirty looks and snide comments from my office manager who lived right next door to the office and never had to use public transportation.

this strike is screwing everyone and it looks like the union has no sympathy from anyone anymore. the best way to make a person mad is to make them wait in the cold and create a major inconvience for everyone who needs to go to work to support themselves and their families. I know that the strike is causing the MTA workers to suffer, too but damn...can't they work something out so that there is at least partial service for all the people who are stranded in the outer boroughs? disbelief

It would be cool but I guess it wouldn't be showing solidarity within the union. The soonest the strike could end is on Thursday but no negotiations are planned for tomorrow. We'll have to wait and see.

Sweet! So did they agree upon terms, or have they just agreed to continue negotiations? (I'm not in NYC right now.)

i think they just agreed to continue negotiations so the possibility of another walkout still exists.

I think the trains will keep on running. I hope the TWU get what they wanted out of all of this. It's not over completely so we'll see.
