You know you're from Northern Minnesota when....it gets so closed the schools actually have pipes burst (I think they use water based heating?) Well I dont even think the pipes had burst. It was just the fact that they were cold. I remember the excited rumours they were closing going round on the Sunday evening.

Maybe it's a secret code for something quite sordid that teachers like to do in the winter.

Lol, no, its the water pipes, they go from the big ass ol' boiler which is usually about fifty years old to the ancient heaters, and made when they didnt think about what the cold would do to the pipes. Im sure you know - They wouldnt be alloed to teach in these places if the scrummy heating wasnt working at all, its too damn cold! Usually all copper pipes too - not so good at dealing with thermal movement... Sorry, im writing a building defects essay at the mo, I cant help it!!

When I wuz a kid, I had to walk thru 5 feet of snow, 6 miles, barefoot & uphill both ways to get an education. ...an' I liked it! And it did put hair on my cojones. But it didn't last very long. Due to severe frostbite they had to be cut off.

We are apparently expecting 6 inches of snow over two days. I know that isn't enough to close my college, but I hope it is. I still have to hand in my unit and I'm not only not done but not very inspired to do it. I've really been depressed over this shit lately. I need more time but I don't see that happening. It is only the first day of finals that we are doing this. I need an extension. Come on, snow!

Detroit? True! | |

It seems like there are always one or two school closing for building problems...not likely in a college. We only close when they can't clean the parking lot fast enough (and frankly, sometimes not even then!).

As a kid, I only remember school closing once or twice. When I taught school, I remember once or twice a year we would have a snow day. In 1999, a freak March snow snormed closed school for four days. Earlier that year, 18 inches feel on New Years Day, but school was closed for the holiday.
I do remember as a high school senior school was closed because of the cold - 80 below zero with the windshield.
