I want to quit working with family...

I have been working in a business with family for over ten years. Over the last two or three months I have been thinking of leaving the business permantly.

It is only over the last month or so that this entire "working with family" thing has bothered me. I really and truly find it difficult to work with them. It really bothers me to say this but, I find it extremely frustrating to even think about work. I dread coming to work everyday.

How can I break the news about my want to leave. I really don't want to hurt anyone. Should I do it in writing, or should I tell them personally.

Any advice?

Tell them you're sleeping with the daughter.
They say: "Which one?"
You say: "Both" (or "all" if more than 2).

I would tell them in person, as opposed to putting it in writing. Just be honest with them about why you want to leave. Family members should be understanding of another family member's feelings. Good luck to you. hug
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I feel terrible having to admit this, but I often find myself thinking "Oh for christ sake, please just fuck off." and walking straight out the door, but these are family members and I can't say that.

A good friend of mine used to work with family members, and she said that it was not easy either. You would think that working with people who are related to you would be nice, but that's not always the case.

Well, it was nice for quite a few years. Now it really sucks. I really don't know why it just does.

I'll give you an example:

I am the administrator of the computer systems. I maintain and repair them whenever is required. If the network goes down. Someone will come to me and say "the computers are'nt working, what did you do?"

They often want solutions and when I tell them it cannot be done, they won't consider that as truth.

your post rings true to me also ... i am in a slightly different situation - i work for a family where EVERYONE is family BUT ME ....

I actually like the family ... but .. after a few years ... it is getting old ... FAST .

I imagine i will miss SOME of them ... if i do leave sometime in 06... but i would never just say "later" in a letter, etc ... like someone said above ... i think it is important to tell what u want ... person to person ... to the boss/head cheese.... maybe u should have a letter with u ...

to me - moving on - change ... is tough ... but "Dreading coming to work " is kinda sucky and needs to be changed ... confused wink

I am sure you are over thinking it. Just tell them. I am sure someone in your family wants a cool job where there isn't that much stress, and were they won't have to work with perfect strangers, some that might not be right in the head.

so you are going out of the family to work?

I'ma going to make you a deal You Can't Refuse.
