Do you take vitamins?

If so, what is your regimen? Anyone familiar with the max. number I.U.s of Vitamin A one should be taking per day? Mg's of Zinc? Also: anyone know what is the max.# I.U.'s of 'A' the body can handle in one pop?

i take a multivitamin, B-complex, C, and a calcium supplement every day.

it's funny you should ask about the max IU of A per day - I was just looking up about that last week because i'd gotten a new brand of multi and was curious about that myself (i thought i was maybe exceeding the daily rec. amount) and i know there can be some yucky side effects from too high a dose of Vit A.

from what i understand - and there seems to be so much conflicting data/info out there which made it all a bit confusing to me. confused - the RDA for Vit A is 5,000 IU, yet the majority of multis i run across have 10,000 IU so... shrug so i don't understand that.

the one thing i did learn was to try to find supplements that use beta carotene as Vit A, and not retinyl palmitate or some other type of pre-formed Vitamin A. apparantly there's less of a chance of toxicity w/the beta carotene than with the pre-formed A

These are questions my dad could answer...but, he's not around anymore sad
My feeling is that unless you are treating something specifically with Vitamin A, you should be ok with whatever is in a GOOD (organic and from the healthfood store) mulitvitamin tablet. Same with Zinc.

My G.P. said "10-15,000" and a trainer told me up to 20,000 (but only 10,000 at a time). I'm inclined to believe my G.P.'s recommendation is safer, but I know this trainer is quite up on the latest findings, so - in short - I don't know what the fuck to believe.

yeah, i think i'd be apt to go with the doctor's suggestion. i'm sure the trainer is well-informed, too, but i don't know. i guess my personal stance in cases pertaining to the fat soluble vitamins, such as are A, E, and D, i would err on the "less" side of the spectrum in regards to supplements until you really really feel safe and comfortable in what you're taking.

years ago i worked for a national vitamin company (Swanson Health) in customer service, and that was such a confusing job. everyone and every company all seems to have their own idea of what and how much to take of a particular supplement.

I eat fruit, vegetables and bread everyday, so yes.

This taking vitamins is like a new religion. I only take those when I have consulted a doctor and have my blood checked. Taking vitamins rather randomly can't be good.

i take them totally randomly. i do B & C & calcium pretty regularly, then in irregular order CQ10, fish oil, & whatever I may feel like doing. I don't think the body always needs the same amounts -- dependent on what I'm getting out of my diet, so I try to let that guide me.

And I swear by Vitamin B for prevention of hangovers -- except for when I forget. smile

I think that zinc isn't supposed to be taken as a supplement for more than a couple weeks at a time. It's good to take when you're feeling sick. You should probably just take one per day of the Vitamin A (10,000 iu?) and not load up on it like vitain C

that's true. too much zinc, or taking zinc for extended periods of time, can potentially cause the *opposite* of what most people take it for in the first place (to fight colds/flu/boost the immune system) and can actually lower a person's immune system.

I take vitamins when I feel my body is lacking something. I often try to eat enough of the right stuff.
