Absinthes...

Have you ever danced with the green fairy?
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

You can order it over the internet. That's what I do.

what do you mean by safe?

Many places in the world, it is illegal for RESALE, but not to own. Thus by buying it over seas, you are not breaking any laws.

Ordering it online is as safe as ordering anything online. There are companies that are good and there are one's that are bad. I started out by buying it through ebay and paying for it with paypal.

The drink has alot of negitive hype. I have drunk it several times, and except for this intrest in prince, I am compleatly healthy and 'normal' wink

Oh yeah. Ive done some pretty crazy things in my time and Absinthe was one of them. Last time we all sat round with an acoustic guitar singing Kansas' 'Dust in the Wind' plus our very own, 'Face Like A Bat'.

If you drink enough, but don't think of it as "wow look at that pink cow", it's more like "wow, the universe is expanding because I can see it" if you know what I mean.

Absynthe is one of those "gotta do a lot to get the effect" kinda things. Do a little you get a little effect. There's not an actual "dose". I mean perhaps to get get a good effect you gotta do like maybe a few glasses or something. You don't get to do a little dink dink and get off. That's more of what I meant.

My understanding is that here in the U.S., it's illegal to import or make it, but merely owning it is okay. Apparently pre-1915 (the year it was banned) absinthe sells for big bucks... I know my grandfather once bought a bottle at an estate auction.

Anyway, I'm told that absinthe is now legal in some Canadian provinces, including B.C., and I'm heading up there soon. I'll have to give it a try. Does anyone in the Vancouver area know whether it's commonly available at bars, or will I have to buy a bottle at a liquor store?
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

Yes, I have.

I think it's been legalized in France now. Years ago, you had to go to the Czech Republic to get it. A softer version was sold in Spain, which I never tried.

A friend had some in the UK a couple of years back. It was alright, a nice feeling, although I didn't drink enough to get serious hallucinations.

BananaCologne

'Absinthe' has not been made with Wormwood for many years now and the colour that comes from that older process is now replaced with colouring and many other ingredients such as Aniseed not found in Absinthe before.

Absinthe was first used as a medicinal in Switzerland in the late 18th century, then used by French soldiers in battle to prevent (read: ignore) fevers, aches and pains etc. It was further popularised when the soldiers returned home and continued with their new-found taste for it - making it such a popular drink that every day there would be a 'Green Hour' in cafe's and bars. The drink Pernod was created post-ban in the early 20th century, as a poor-mans alternative to Absinthe, but this should NOT be confused with the oft-held belief that it is simply 'Absinthe without the Wormwood' - this is a total and utter myth, plain and simple.

There are probably hundereds of Absinth brands out there now - the past five years or so have seen many new brands coming out. I'd recommend 'La Fée' as one of the better ones for novices, but don't expect too much from it - it's a pretty straight-up, no-nonsense drink, but if it's the 'look' you're after for a party or something, few can match its colour. It's mainly artificially coloured and chock full of herbs spices and God-knows what, but it's cheap and cheerful and one of the more readily available ones out there. For those with a little more experience, the 'Absinthe Toulouse Lautrec' is one of the best (if not THE best) on the market in its current form, and one of the few that does actually produce a fine Louche (a milking/clouding of the Absinthe when prepared correctly through the wonderful dripping process - very gauche!) but it can be a pain to track down.

It should be noted that you can not BUY or PREPARE AT HOME a PROPER Absinthe drink any longer - it needs to be distilled properly. The only way to get that would be to strap on your backpack and hiking boots and wind your way into the deepest recesses of the Czech Republic, although there is a cult underground trade in the buying and selling of vintage pre-ban Absinthe if you look for it - but be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for the pleasure! big grin I certainly wouldn't recommend you buying any 'make your own at home' rubbish off eBay that's for sure - not unless you want to risk going blind.

For those with a serious interest in this remarkable drink, I can't recommend the following website and it's resources (including links to vendors etc) highly enough: www.absinthe.se Also, be sure to check out the wonderful www.oxygenee.com too.

Enjoy your trip with the fairy!

'Keep always this dim corner for me, that I may sit while the Green Hour glides, a proud pavine of Time. For I am no longer in the city accursed, where Time is horsed on the white gelding Death, his spurs rusted with blood.

I am watching the opalescence of my absinthe, and it leads me to ponder upon a certain very curious mystery, persistent in legend. We may call it the mystery of the rainbow.

Oh Beauty! Long did I love thee, long did I pursue thee, thee elusive, thee intangible! And lo! thou enfoldest me by night and day in the arms of gracious, of luxurious, of shimmering silence.

- Aleister Crowley

'Absinthe has a wonderful colour, green. A glass of Absinthe is as poetical as anything in the world. What difference is there between a
glass of Absinthe and a sunset?
The first stage is like ordinary drinking, the second when you begin to see monstrous and cruel things, but if you can persevere you will
enter in upon the third stage where you see things that you want to see, wonderful curious things.
One night I was left sitting, drinking alone and very late in the Café Royal, and I had just got into this third stage when a waiter came in with a green apron and began to pile the chairs on the tables.
'Time to go, Sir' he called out. Then he brought in a watering can and began to water the floor. 'Time’s up Sir. I'm afraid you must go now, Sir.'
'Waiter, are you watering the flowers?' I asked, but he didn’t answer.
'What are your favourite flowers, waiter?' I asked again.
'Now sir, I must really ask you to go now, time's up,' he said firmly. 'I'm sure that tulips are your favourite flowers,' I said, and as I got up
and passed out into the street I - felt - those – heavy – tulip – heads – brushing - against - my - shins.'

- Oscar Wilde

Some companies make their absinthe using the old processes. I am not talking about crap absinthes.
