I call this the artist suck-up. Artists need to be the center of attention, thus they always find some complement to be liked.

I hate the suck-up artistry of artists.

easy there... [artist.]

I actually take it as a compliment, although it is just a strange thing to tell somebody. I wonder if that's why, when I was travelling in Europe, strangers would approach me, speaking in a foreign tongue? (Asking questions, pointing to a map, wondering where a certain shop is and pointing to the shopping bag I held). I'd heard that Americans in Europe stick out like sore thumbs, and I noticed it when I was there...I guess I blended in more. Which makes me happy because I'd love to live there!

Really? Which country do you have your sights set on?

I think the issue of blending in is quite funny because it really depends on the situation and context if it's preferable or not. I totally agree with you that it's nice to blend in if you're in a foreign country because then the differences (which are often obstacles) are so many and big that you quickly get sick of attracting attention. You just want to get a glimpse of what the locals are like when they've "dropped their guard" and treat you like a peer.

But would I want to blend in if I'm in my home town? Not really, because then I'd feel like I'd been swallowed up by the masses and lost my identity. Would I want to blend in in a bar on a Saturday night? To some degree maybe, since I'm there to relax and enjoy myself, but I also might want to stand out a bit to attract the opposite sex, etc. I think in general, I simply want to blend in just enough to be given a chance to show who I really am. People can be so impatient with things they aren't used to.

Retina, I think your "weird compliments" mean that you are probably good in bed! They sound like come-ons to me.

I like that interpretation! smile

I definitely did take their comments as compliments since touching is such a huge part of having sex, and since they liked how I was doing it. I just wasn't aware that I touched them in any special way. I always just go with my instincts and what feels right.

I don't usually get compliments in real life so it's hard to think of one. hmmm

I've been complimented by women on how I touch them, for some reason. One said she liked that I touched her "in a very adult way" whatever that meant. Another said I "know when to be soft and when to be firm". hmmm Maybe not so weird compliments per se, but definitely not run of the mill either.

hmmm Maybe she meant you went straight for the kill, instead of taking your time. smile

So that's what adults do, eh? smile

Any country, really. Particularly the U.K. or Italy (although my not knowing Italian could be a stumbling block). I'd like to teach ESL but I know it is hard to get a work visa. It's a pipe dream, to live and work in Europe for a while.

I generally like blending in, and in Europe it was nice to be mistaken as one of their own. I guess that sometimes, when I was with my huge backpack or reading a huge map, it gave me away, though! lol

One time I was at a rave, and a girl approached me and said that she'd photographed me at a previous event several months prior because she loved my eyes. batting eyes

Didn't you feel uncomfortable that she was photographing you without you knowing it? I would be creeped out by that.

I think if most women found out a man they didn't know was photographing them anywhere without them knowing it they would be creeped out.
