I once went to a genuine Dim Sum restaurant in Vancouver which was run by "real" Chinese people (lived most of their lives in China) and it was fantastic! I was the only white guy there and the only reason I'd heard about the place was because some Chinese friends of mine had let me in on the "secret". I can tell you, that food was cooked with great care...far superior to that of the run-of-the-mill, so-called Chinese restaurants you find on every other street corner in most major cities.

I went to several "chinese" buffet/all you can eat for 10 pesos restaurants in Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata. Chinese in the loosest term of the word. SO funny, it was mainly asado! they did have some odd dishes there, like chicken and pineapple, and some nori rolls with HAM in them!

These days the sign "Chinese restaurant" just means they serve some kind of semi-Asian mishmash (beware especially of sterotypical names like Golden Dragon or Bamboo Palace!). I think the Chinese food culture became too popular too fast and every hack on the planet wanted to be in on the moneymaking. It's really too bad. I can see it happening to Japanese food now. It's still usually good, but in a few years the art will have been lost on the international arena.

I keep hearing about egg rolls they have in the US, they don't have that here. We have these enormous spring rolls full of god knows what and really sweet brightly coloured dishes - especially in food courts, I bet the chinese wouldn't eat it. I know most australians don't go for the chickens feet.

I just think it's too bad that they change the whole menu, so that even if you wanted to try the real thing, you just couldn't. Plus the cooking gets sloppy and uninspired after a while. They probably think "well, these people can't appreciate the real cuisine anyway, so why bother?". Plus it's the "quick cash" issue.

I reckon the whole menu is invented on foreign shores, there is a vietnamese suburb near us where there are also proper yum cha and thai restaurants with asian supermarkets, we go there to eat and we are usually the only non-asians, and the food is totally different, but fantastic and CHEAPER!

Ah, so he's that kind of a guy. A friend of mine in Canada used to attract those types a lot. She got quite frustrated since she could never tell for sure if they were hitting on her because she was generally attractive or just because she looked Asian. Alessandra on the other hand (a Brazilian woman I lived with in Stockholm) got the same thing but never complained. On the contrary she loved the attention and always argued that she now "got guys that wouldn't even have given her a second glance in Brazil". I can understand both perspectives. .

Don't they serve a chicken claw as part of Dim Sum?? I'm not sure, I left it to my Chinese friends to order. I just took care of the eating! And no, there were no claws in the stuff we got at least. [Edited 12/5/05 17:19pm]

He is in Thailand right now trying to get a girlfriend. His problem is the girls want to marry him to come and live in Australia - this keeps happening to him over and over and the language barrier makes it hard for him to explain to them yes he does want to marry and have kids, but after he gets to know them better! Also the ones of temp. visas here trying to get a permanent residency jump him too. So he is also quite suspicious of their motives. His mum just says why don't you find a nice australian girl he is 40 now and still single.

There's a restaurant here that started as a chinese restaurant, became a thai place and is now a japanese buffet. They should just put a sign on the building that says 'Somewhere in Asia' and forget it. No More Haters on the Internet.
