Question about galley slaves

What do you call the guy who would walk up and down the aisle in a ship's galley? You know, the guy who'd crack the whip if the slaves were rowing too slow? I'm certain there was a name for this person...what would they list it as on a resume? And also, didn't this person wear a mask like an executioner?

I'm looking for serious answers here, but feel free to get all smartassery out of your system on this thread. I mean, you know - what the hell.

Isn't the ship's kitchen called the galley? confuse

As you're presumably talking about slave ships his title would be Slave Master.

If the oarsmen were workers as opposed to slaves then they wouldn't have had a guy cracking a whip, instead they would often have had a guy banging a drum to keep the rhythm, he would have been called the Chief Oarsman.

And as applekisses has mentioned, the Galley is actually the kitchen. What you're talking about would probably have been called the oar deck, or on a slave ship it would be called the slave deck as that's where they lived, chained to their oars.

and the place on the ship where they hang the art is the gallery...

and when they count the people on board, it's a tally.

In that case the guy who walks up and down the aisle in a ship's galley is called The Pasta Chef, and that's not a whip he's flinging about, it's dinner. He's separating his pasta before leaving it to dry on the boom (technical term for the big horizontal stick that they tie the bottom of the sail with).

Yes, The Pasta Chef would often be seen wearing a mask, due to the amount of flour required for the preparation of pasta.
