Smoking Banned! Come March 26th 2006 in Scotland I can walk into any pub or restaurant and not worry about breathing in other peoples pollutants or coming out with my cloths smelling of a disgusting stench.
It takes courage to deliver justice, it’s a pity the English system fell short in that department. Hot debate will no doubt follow.

It is completely voluntary or does every establishment have to provide a smoke free zone or what ? Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

As an asthmatic that's great news. I don't like having to be rushed to the hospital because some jackass wants to slowly kill themself.
That said, I don't think it's right to ban smoking everywhere. People can burn their lungs all day if that's what they want. I guess the question becomes "where is banning smoking a good idea and where is it taking things too far?" "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Why do smokers never get any compassion ? Do you really think smokers want to slowly kill themselves ? Of course they don't, they're addicts. I find it bizarre that alcoholics, heroin or crack addicts, even sex addicts get more compassion than smokers. It seems as if there are two standards for addiction. There's the 'it was your choice to start smoking, so fuck you' attitude towards smokers, and then there's the 'oh you're an addict, how can we help you' attitude toward every other kind of addiction. Give smokers a break, they're addicts too, they need support, not insults. That said, I don't think it's right to ban smoking everywhere. People can burn their lungs all day if that's what they want. Why not ? As long a people can still smoke outside in the open air and in their own homes, wwhat's the problem? Why should there be exceptions ? In Ireland we have a total ban, so you can't smoke in any public building. The only exceptions are prisons and hotel rooms. I think it works quite well - no more smelly restaurants, smokers are happy enough to pop outside for a cigarrette, and probably smoke less than they would if they were staying inside, so that can only be good. The majority of the people that frequent pubs smoke That may be true, but only because many non-smokers won't go to pubs because they're full of smoke. It certainly isn't true of pubs in Ireland, although it probably was before our smoking ban came into effect. I think many people who would've been occasional 'social' smokers no longer bother. There's probably a few die-hards who no longer go to the pub, preferring to get take-outs and drink at home where they can smoke in peace, and there were plenty of people who used the implementation of the smoking ban as the perfect opportunity to give up. Pubs are getting slightly less custom than they used to, but there are now plenty of people who go to the pub more often now that they are smoke free. besides it should be up to the owner of the pub
Why don't all you non smokers just start your own non smoking pups I think it comes down to a human rights issue - as a pub is a workplace you're basically condemning anyone who works there to breathe in the smoke of others, and that means you're not offering equal opportunities employment. There have been a few non-smoking pubs opening in the UK, but as far as I know they're not doing terribly well. I would guess because inevitably most people know and socialise with people who smoke, and if you're a smoker going out with your friends for a few drinks, which pub would you choose ? Oddly enough, marijuana smoke (whether first or secondhand) or tobacco smoked from a pipe don't bother me at all, but cigarrettes do.
Must be something to do with the chemicals rather than the smoke itself. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Give smokers a break, they're addicts too, they need support, not insults. I can see your point, but it's not as if they deliberately blow smoke in your face. Ulitmately, it's your choice whether or not you go somewhere filled with smoke, and that has nothing to do with feeling compassion for someone with an addiction. I know that's not fair either, as you have little or no choice if you want to go out for a meal or a drink, which is why I agree wholeheartedly with workplace smoking bans. Oddly enough, marijuana smoke (whether first or secondhand) or tobacco smoked from a pipe don't bother me at all, but cigarrettes do.
Must be something to do with the chemicals rather than the smoke itself. More than likely, there's all sorts of crap in cigarrettes. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Smoking has been part of nightlife since forever and it should stay that way , imo The fact that non smoking pups aren't doing well is proof that the whole idea is silly , imo

I really don't know what to think. As a smoker, who turned into a social smoker the last few months, I guess I will cry my heart out when smoking isn't longer allowed in pubs. On the other hand, those are always the places where I start smoking again. Sometimes I haven't smoked in two weeks, but when I go out I just fail...So far the 'me-part'.
As for the health of others, I think it's reasonable to forbid smoking in pubs and restaurants. But it's going to be hard. And a good thing, probably.

Absolute Horseshit. I've done plenty of research on the subject and I've never seen any credible evidence which indicates that cannabis is more harmful than tobacco, or even remotely as harmful as tobacco. And by evidence I mean actual scientific study, not government sponsored propaganda. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I do empathize with smokers trying to stop. If I weren't so vain, I would have nevers topped. I won't even contemplate kissing someone who smokes. If you scores some ectacy though, , we can party!

Perhaps you should do the same, rather than just believing what the Marihuana-Museum tell you. If cannabis is so dangerous how come your health system statistics don't reflect that ?
