Sometimes people are put off by "starving." Think of it more as fasting. Same thing; it just sounds better. I almost always fast a dog with an upset tummy. It just gives it a chance to settle down and work on getting better, assuming it's nothing serious. Unless a dog is hypoglycemic (mostly a problem with very tiny dogs and puppies), fasting for 24 or even 48 hours won't do any damage as long as the dog remains hydrated. Then start out by feeding small amounts of bland foods.

"People food" isn't inherently evil. It's just a matter of knowing what not to feed. It's not as daunting as it might seem... the majors are chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions, and there are mixed reports on the turkey skin, but I err on the side of caution. The reports I've read make enough sense to me for me to be leary, especially since there are so many other good things they can eat with no problem. Generally, despite the different dietary requirements, if it's healthy enough for you to eat, it's ok for dogs. Everything in moderation, of course, but that's with anything and anybody, I reckon.

For nausea, I like fasting. For diarrhea, canned pumpkin with no spices works a charm most of the time. A couple of tablespoons will often firm 'em right back up.

Yes, boiled rice and very lean boiled ground beef (or chicken or whichever meat you choose) is good for a bland diet. When cooking rice for dogs, it's typically better to cook it to mush. Dogs don't process grains quite the same as we do, so it's usually best to overcook them (overcooked by our own standards, but "right" for dogs), especially for bland diets prepared for ill dogs. The more they're cooked, the easier they are for a weak tummy to digest. Actually, even for a healthy dog, more is better in regard to cooking grains if you're indeed going to give grains to a dog (there is much debate on grains vs. no grains in canine diets).
