B1tch travels to Arkansas, lives the clean life for 5 days, visits a Wal-Mart, and has an epiphany so we went to see the in-laws in the Ozarks for Thanksgiving. that alone got me a lot of "oh, wow's" laced with pity from my friends.
we had a good time driving out there, got some snow in Eastern Tennessee, spent the night in Memphis and got there tuesday around noon. for those of you not familiar with the area - there is NOTHING in northern Arkansas but trees and cows and lakes and horses. and it's not exactly the most integrated of areas - kinda eerie. took a little trip to the main square of Mountain Home, where we saw two prisoners putting up christmas lights at the courthouse - in black and white striped prison garb! very strange... as you might imagine, there's no grocery store in Mountain Home, so off to Wal-Mart we went before i had a chance to protest... i've never felt so out of place in my life. i didn't spend any money there of course - bad enough that i ended up eating some of the food we bought there. but since my in-laws are some of the most conservative people i know, i figured going all PC on them would not make for a pleasant T-giving, so i sucked it up. the in-laws don't drink or smoke, so you can imagine, going through this sober and without the help of a glowing stick of nicotine was quite the change of pace for me. so all that clean living must have been responsible for my epiphany - for 12 or so years, i have believed that my mother-in-law hates me. and she may still, but what i've found out over this holiday is that she hates herself more than anybody. she never has a good word to say about anybody, and has the answers to any and all questions. but the underlying reason is that she is a perfectionist who never quite lives up to her own standards. that must be a very frustrating way to live, and it makes me sad to see somebody put that kind of pressure on herself. so, 1800 miles, a shopping experience and an epiphany later - i'm off to fix a drink and have a ciggie on the deck. how was your thanksgiving?!

I am very glad that you made it home safely! I am also glad that you survived the whole in law experience and Walmart too.
My Thanksgiving was very different from most. Most of our family was out of town so we were invited to our neighbors house. I usually do not get along well with the husband so I hung out with the wife and drank way too much wine as we cooked. There son came home from college to surprise his dad so mom was very happy & drunk by time he came in. Food was not too good other then the appetizers that I made and the salad I threw together. Luckily, they had other plans for later that night so everyone ate fast, no seconds? then we cleaned up and I went home and threw up.. That is a first for me on Thanksgiving... She brought over leftovers yesterday and said she had so much fun that we need to do that every year.. I do not think so..

That sounded like a decent time none the less. I had sorta a christmas like that last year. Going for San Fran to the sticks of Fla. quite a culture shock.
You see now the evil of Walmart. one stop for all to shop. One couldn't even open a place nearby even if they wanted to. My thanksgiving was not that good. We had a friend be a snot rag and bailed out on coming with us to my Step Sisters, last minute. Still needs to apologize. We got lost about 50 miles out of the way, my sister who is not a cook insists on cooking Thanksgiving with no interference from others (purple gravy). And we got lost slighly on the way back. I was not in a good mood. But all is good now. I'm making cookie today in practice for Xmas baking coming up. Or I just want cookies glad you made it back. Have a lovely Sunday! Arkansas scared me, my Grandma lived there. She was a perfectionist Southern Baptist. I love her and all, but damn.

I thought you were going to say you were quitting drinking and smoking, I was going to puke, but the story had a good ending!!!

you don't go to wal-mart but you smoke? do you use organic tobacco? i know there are some independent growers out there but usually smoking = supporting big tobacco, which seems to be the same as supporting those huge companies like wal-mart. i'm not trying to attack or anything but i am honestly surprised to hear that you smoke considering what i know about your politics.
