RENT was fuckin horrible. *spoilers* I wanted to like this damn movie. I'm 100% in fucking love with rosario, so I figured it wouldn't be hard. I get misty everytime I hear that Seasons of Love song, also a plus. Rosario plays a stripper, awesome. Turns out Taye Diggs can sing, but most of the singin is autotuned on protools and it's obvious, so I don't know what any of these folks actually sound like, except the Black lezza girl, who you can tell is unprocessed. Anyway, the reason I hated it was simple. It wasn't bad, per se, until the last couple of scenes. One of the most endearing characters, a drag queen named Angel dies of AIDS toward the middle and it changes everyone's lives. ok. Then Rosario, who also has AIDS, gets rejected by her boyfriend who also has AIDS. Now you would think that living in this day and age where AIDS is often a death sentence and a scarlet letter that vastly limits a person's options romantically, a guy and a girl who find each other, love each other and don't have to worry about infecting each other would stay together, right? Nope. He dumps her cause she went out with Taye Diggs. She goes AWOL, homeless, on a heroin bender, stops takin her AZT, gets pnuemonia or somethin and dies on her ex's kitchen table. Here's where I stood up and booed at the theater. This asshole sings her a song about how much he loves her and how wrong he was. What does her dead ass do? Come back to life, perfectly healthy like Sleepin Beauty or some shit. Where were you when Angel died, mufucka!? Take your ass over to the ICU, I'm sure you can bring back some coma victims and get some heads off life support. It trivialized the severity of everything the movie portrayed and made Angel's death seem like just the way it goes for gays, but straight couples' gon work it out. Bullshit. Shitty movie and if that's how the play went, that's shitty too.

They were singing "Everyone Has AIDS" it's a direct parody... one of the puppets even looks like the angel character Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

well...you sorta have some info wrong... It is believed that a person can be reinfected with HIV (superinfection) so it is not safe for two HIV infected ppl to have sex without a latex barrier. I've always viewed RENT as telling just a couple of point of views about living and dying with HIV NOT that it was some view into how ppl are living with HIV all over. Too many stories to tell to make a generalization..... [Edited 11/26/05 10:42am]

Ok, see I thought there was such a thing as superinfection, but I wasn't sure. That kept ringin in my head during the movie, cause I'm like why are they all so relieved to find out the other person has AIDS too? It's still not ok. But I hope you're not defendin this milquetoast Disney ass version of such a stark reality. It really is overblown, overrated and overhyped and just a poor piece of writing. The songs are alright. The plot could strain pasta.

as someone living with HIV, I have found that having to have the BIG conversation with someone you are interested in romantically is INCREDIBLEY hard. It's hard to work up the nerve, it's hard to say, and the fear of rejection is massive. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

I saw the stage version a few years ago, but the sound system was so bad, it just wasn't a pleasant experience. So I was hoping to see that movie would be great. Even though we left with a MASSIVE headache after the touring production, I still thought the music was good, and I love the "energy" of the musical. I'm usually into more "dance" type musicals, but I really loved the energy of the show.
It's a shame that the movie was disappointing. I have read mixed reviews about it. We were going to this weekend, but my oldest dog is very, sick; in fact, there is a possibility that we might have to put him down. So I would rather stay at home to take care of him. Anyway, maybe when and IF my dog by next weekend, we'll venture out to see the movie.

from your first post, I got that you didn't think this was a good representation of how ppl are who are living with HIV. I was just saying that every experience is vast, no HIV story is the same so this is one point of view. I've met ppl who never really got depressed with they found out and just moved into dealing with the infection and I know others that are very angry and depressed. That's all.

so it's the entire story that you didn't like right?
I was reading some articles about the implausibility of the premise of Rent. Since you are already in the "i hate Rent camp" here's some fuel for your fire http://www.slate.com/id/2131017 there's more on amazon. btw I am in the "i love rent" camp but everyone is entitled to their opinion. Ex-Moderator | I liked it. I had some problems with it. But overall, it was good. Not mind-blowing good. But not disappointing either. Just a nice little film. A good escape on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Good. |

the reviews seem to be very mixed, huh? it really depends if you liked the show, are going in with preconcieved political agendas, are expecting something different from the actors All in all if you are a fan you won't be disappointed. If not but like musicals and aren't overly concerned with plausibility it should be ok for you. I loved it.
