Cruise Buys Sonogram Machine for Katie

Wed Nov 23, 6:41 PM ET

NEW YORK - Tom Cruise has made an unusual purchase for his fiancee Katie Holmes — one that will let them see the development of their baby. "I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise says on ABC's "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005," to air Nov. 29 (10 p.m. EST).

Excerpts of the interview are published in the latest issue of People magazine, on newsstands Friday.

The 43-year-old actor said the couple will do their own sonograms, which show fetus development with ultrasound waves. Cruise said he will donate the machine to a hospital after the baby is born. Sonogram machines range in cost from $25,000 to $200,000.

Holmes' pregnancy was announced in early October. The couple, who have been dating since April, became engaged in June.

"We are gonna get married next summer or early fall," Cruise told Walters. "We don't have a date set yet."

Cruise said he didn't know if the baby is a boy or a girl. He has two children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman. It will be the first child for 26-year-old Holmes.

Yep, it's official, Tom Cruise thinks he's a doctor! disbelief

I wonder if they're even receiving prenatal care, or if Tom is doing it all himself. He'll probably forbid anyone from being in the delivery room. neutral

Katie is sure proving beyond a shadow of a doubt just how dimwitted she is, putting every aspect of her entire life in the hands of CruiseControl.

i read she got kicked out of a movie theater recently because she was using a vibrating device held up against her stomach because it was supposed to be "soothing to the baby", but the noise of it was bothering the other theater patrons and Katie refused to turn the thing off so they made her leave.

i'm really wondering what the real deal is with this whole weird arrangement, anyway. she sure got huge and pregnant real suddenly, and both she and Tom were screeching at the top of their lungs how "IN LOVE!!" they are/were, yet now Tom says they will "probably" get married next summer or fall but have no date set. confuse if they're so in love and he's spazzing out all over the place about how perfect she is and all, and now she's pregnant with his child, why not get married now? or a couple months ago even, if they're concerned with how she'd look in her wedding pictures.

i loved the recent South Park episode -- "Just come out of the closet, Tom. It's OK. We all just want you to come out of the closet. You don't have to hide in there anymore, Tom, just come on out of the closet." lol

Reincarnate

hmm she is pregnant isn't she? It just seems like a really strange thing to do and the cynic in me is wondering whether there's something to hide

... but at least a lot of people will benefit from his generosity so I suppose I shouldn't be so nasty.

From a health standpoint, that's just crazy. Babies hate ultrasounds, and I can't imagine that a regular onslaught of electro-magnetic rays could do anything but harm to an unborn child...

That's why my doctor will only do 1 midway through unless there is a problem. The sound waves used are VERY loud to the baby and ther have not been enough studies on the effect of multiple/many ultrasounds.

So it has to be a SILENT birth, and possibly no talking to the child for a week after, but it's okay to blast it's poor ears now???? I don't get it.
