George Best Dies aged 59

What are your thoughts on him being classed as a hero after all his drinking and even after his liver transplant.

REDFEATHERS

I was lying in bed last night, thinking OMG when I wake up he will be dead, what a weird horrible feeling. I will admit I wasnt a great fan.. but my condolonces and sympathies go out to his family and closest to him. I know many ppl were angered after he was given a liver transplant - a chance - but he started drinking again.. its his illness, but I hope there will be some comfort out there, the fact he is donating his organs and started a campaign to bring awareness and help to alcoholics worldwide. pray rose

He wasted a second chance in life ,all the (non-rich) people waiting on transplants. It is sad alcohol controlled him so much.

I think he was given respect as a footballer, and that's why so many people cared about him.

As for his drinking, we all have our own mountains to climb in life. I think it's sad that alcohol ruled his life and I'm sure he would have given anything overcome his addiction and I think it's sad that some people I know are so judgemental of him and other people with addictions and problems.

A kind, shy man with very human flaws... just like anyone else made of flesh and bones.
But roll him a football and you'd being standing in the shadow a GENIUS. An artist. A magician. A TRUE LEGEND.

How U doin' Calum? It's like seeing your future huh?

Seriously tho', I'm not a football fan of such but I do have videos of him on the pitch and the man was truly amazing.
Shame he abused his bod so much but what he has done posthumously deserves a lot of respect too.

peaceful journey champ. pray

I saw George Best in action a number of times.....

...He was a great Footballer....arguable the best.....

...Which is what he wants to be remembered for

He wasn't just a player ...but a real character and entertainer too....

I sorta find it ironic that he died when the new licencing laws came into effect...

...(Gerge Best had a sense of humour as well)

He was a great footballer, yes. But I feel more sympathy right now for the family of whoever it was who 'donated' the liver which George wasted and the person who would have got liver instead. He had more chances than most to rectify his life but point-blank refused to do so. Alcoholism arguably may be a disease, but it's a self-inflicted disease that can be controlled with a bit of will-power.

Great footballer, but role model? Hell no.

Fair dues, you're entitled to your opinion but I must say, I think you've over simplified the circumstances some what. In fact, I KNOW you have. Makes me wonder how much you know about George Best the man.

Unless I'm going to write an essay about it, of course I'm going to simplify it in a short post. I confess I don't know what started the man drinking and made him continue to drink even when family and friends were constantly begging him to stop, if I did perhaps I would have more sympathy, but the detailed reasons why have been almost completely absent in all the media reports about his sad death. Perhaps when the props for all his fantastic footballing skills have died down, the media will uncover what drove him to destroy himself, lessons can be learned from that and we will all 'know' the man.

If you are to put him up as an icon of great footballing talent, then surely also you have to put him up as an example of how NOT to deal with personal problems and alcholism.
