chewing gum is usually banned because it is difficult to remove from under seats etc when people fail to dispose of it properly (see the rules of chewing gum in Singapore, and the consequences!).
Chewing gum may not be a BAD thing in itself, however chewing it (when it is not allowed) is breaking the rules, and in your case, your serious question was seen as sass and defying authority. Chewing with your mouth open is considered rude, as would be with gum, hence many rebellious people deliberately chew their gum with their mouth open just to be provocative and daring.

After a 12-year ban on chewing gum, residents of Singapore can finally chew in public without worry of punishment
Nutrition Health Review, Winter, 2003 “After a 12-year ban on chewing gum, residents of Singapore can finally chew in public without worry of punishment.” Although the ban on gum was lifted in May 2004 by Singapore authorities, people who wish to buy a pack for personal consumption must first submit their names and identification card numbers. If they do not register correctly, the pharmacist who sold the gum could face up to two years in prison. Long known for its stringent and severe crime policies, Singapore banned the manufacture, import, and sale of chewing gum in 1992. The country's founding father declared that the gum fouled the streets, buildings, buses, and subways. OK, so you can chew gum in Singapore again

"Chewing gum is really gross.
Chewing gum I hate the most." Actually I don't. I chew gum all the time. I know it annoys a lot of people and for the most part I don't care, but I WILL NOT smack my gum on the phone. :blowingbubbles: I'm firmly planted in denial
