Post-Raw, I liked Coming To America, Boomerang and the first Nutty Professor.

I'll tell you why. STAND UP IS NOT EASY! Comedians just make it look that way. Most of your favorite comics have been at it for years prior to getting any notoriety. You develop a set of jokes that work by trial and error. Then after you've honed the act, you take it on the road. If anyone saw Jerry Seinfeld's documentary Comedian, you'll know what I mean.
For Eddie to go back now would be disaster. He needs at least a year of working out material in clubs prior to doing so. So it's not just something you can do willy-nilly.

Noooo, and I actually sat through that awful third one. They'd bring back that silly Serge character again too

Ellie, you're from England -- right? Have you heard of a comedian by the name of Reginald D. Hunter? He's also American but works soley in the UK. I hear he's supposedly some comedic messiah. I've never heard his stuff before. If you have, how would you grade him?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh no, never heard of him http://www.chortle.co.uk/...unter.html
I'll look out for him in the future though, thanks One I do like though is Ed Byrne. He's Irish and unfortunately he tried to go mainstream too quickly and burned out with crappy sitcoms and TV ads, but he's a brilliant stand-up... and a massive Prince fan. He bought Prince's guitar at an auction for £12,000. [Edited 11/18/05 16:28pm]

He's black too...not that it matters. Last year, he turned down the Richard Pryor comedy award in Edinburgh I think. I always thought that was kinda odd. Turning down free publicity like that. Pretty much explains why you never heard of him...

For Eddie to go back now would be disaster. He needs at least a year of working out material in clubs prior to doing so. So it's not just something you can do willy-nilly. I didn't get to see Seinfeld's "Comedian" but I do remember Jerry Seinfeld saying that he had reached a career mini-crisis after he decided to leave his show. He basically said that while the show was at his peak, he got too comfortable and started losing his comic edge. Part of the reason he left his own TV show, besides family reasons, was to go back on the stand-up scene and try to get his comic skills back. He said that this was the hardest work he had ever done in his career. I remember Eddie Murphy giving some print interview a while back, and he said that the main reason he was doing mostly family comedies now and not the edgy stuff he was doing back in the 1980's was because he didn't want to film any movies he would be uncomfortable having his kids watch. I think he considers himself more of an actor than a comedian these days, though I have heard rumors that he may come back and do stand-up in the future once his kids are grown.

Certainly, there is merit to what you say. Everyone mellows a little bit with age. Especially when they have children. It just sorta comes with the territory. Regarding Seinfeld, you're right again. Althought another reason why Jerry quit was because Larry David had quit a year ahead of him. Larry David was the real engine behind the Seinfeld show. Once he left, the handwriting was on the wall. Anyone doubting David's prowess need only watch an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The guy is funny.

Charlie Murphy with the right writers and career advisors could be what Eddie Murphy was during the "Raw" and "SNL" days.

I remember someone commenting that once upon a time, Eddie made fun of Bill Cosby...then he BECAME Bill Cosby! "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

The formula is very simple....
Eddie got married.... When Eddie got married...he lost his "edge" Not a diss towards being married...but he aint been right since Boomerang... Same goes for Chris Rock...he just shifted his comedy to his new tv show...which is family oriented.... Sa-Dah-Tay? June 19's Pop Culture Commentary - Beyonce'

missfee said: Hell yeah, in my opinion Charlie Murphy is even funnier than Chris Rock!! That's because you're viewing him in a different generational context. That's like people who say, Dave Attel is funnier than Richard Pryor. It seems that way because you're seeing Attel today and comparing him to someone who preceded him. Nevermind that many of the comedy routines and techniques was created by the elder of the two. It's easy to follow a formula created by others than create one as you go along. We just see and think in the here and now. Put Charlie now up against Eddie in his prime -- and Eddie would mop the floor with him!

he started to change his movie formula after he got caught with the transvestite in his car. Then he started doing a lot of family type films. I wish he would do stand up again. I have liked some of his films in recent years. The Klump films were hilarious and Bowfinger with Steve Martin was a very funny film.

I miss the Old Eddie Murphy. With cussin'. Movies like "Raw". Lately Eddie's movies has aimed to a more young audience, like "Daddy Day Care", and I think it's called "The Huanted Masion" has been for little kids."Coming to America", "Golden Child","Harlem Nights", and "Raw" was Eddie at his best I think. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Just like now, Payton Manning can play quarterback better than Bart Starr in 2005. The comparison is in real time. The debate has nothing to do with legacies. No one would seriously debate that Eddie Murphy is a far greater comedian than his brother, based on his body of work. But as of late, Charlie's made me laugh more than Eddie. Chris Rock ain't stole SHIT
I miss the REAL Eddie Murphy everytime Coming to America or Boomerang or 48 Hours comes on tv. I don't know what the hell happened to him but he's no longer a draw for me. He just seems permanently MOLDED from his tranny hooker incident, hiding behind voice over gigs & family values bullshit. Gimme a break - I don't care who you fuck, just be funny

The tranny thing seems to have caused him irreparable damage. I dont know if he's bisexual or not. But there's something to it. He haven't been able to get back into the swing of things since. He had a lull in his career and brief rebirth with the Nutty Professor. But that was pre-tranny
