I know what you mean. I tried to stay away from Wal-Mart, but they sucked me in with those prices and all the selections. Even though I think it's kinda weird buying your groceries at a store that also sells clothing and guns, I couldn't help myself. I can buy a 21 oz. box of BRAND NAME cereal for $2.44. At other local stores that very same cereal costs $5.69! Damn you Sam Walton!

You don't want to go to Walmart for the deals because people literally FIGHT to get the stuff. It's always entertaining when they show video of it on the news every year.

knock yourself out - if you love Wal-Mart so much, then Wal-Mart you deserve!

btw, i heard on the news today that Wal-Mart and other retailers are starting their holiday sales early because they believe that once people get their heating bills, they will curb their holiday spending. doesn't get much more opportunistic than that.

I actually prefer Target. Usually no looooong lines at check out. Cleaner. Friendlier staff (perhaps I've been living in the "real" part of the city too long) They also have some pretty wicked shoes that can pass as nine west n stuff.

I love Target

and none of that silly bullshit corporate evilness of walmart...I mean, I'm sure it is there to a point, but if people would take the time to read about wal mart, you wouldn't love it so much.

I actually DON'T like Wal-Mart and I have moments of self loathing after going to Wal_mart, but it's so addictive...in the same way that that damn "Silver Shamrock" song is addictive...it will take an exorcism to rid me of both Wal-Mart and Silver Shamrock!

Rembember the sources though. Liberals have targeted walmart and a lot of stuff they are writing isn't fair. I will say it again. Is cartboy a job that people should be able to make a career out of and collect full benefits for for 35 years at a salary high enough to support a family? Of course not. It's a job for high school kids but thats not what these bleeding heart types want to believe. They are out to save the world.

Also, its not any harder to get a job at Target then Walmart but people still line up for jobs at Walmart. Its another case of liberals trying to protect people who don't need or want protecting.

well, LM, some of this is in the numbers. Wal-Mart operates 4,382 stores worldwide, compared to Target's 1,100. Increasingly, Wal-Mart is the only employer, especially for entry-level jobs, in a region. And if they get their way, they will be the only remaining retailer in many markets.

and if getting the word out about Wal-Marts employment and purchasing practices is a "liberal thing", then i think right-wingers are falling down on the job, since they proclaim to care for the little guy.

yeah, that's the stuff I'm referring to more so than the point LM made on the cartboy. I agree with him on that. But the wicked practices Wal mart uses behind the doors is ugly. Their pricing schemes to the product suppliers is rotten. This is getting too much like a P&R threadj.....let me say something stupid to get it back on track.

There are not 4,400 Walmart stores in the US. That number includes sam's Clubs and the liquor store thingies they own and that aside you still didn't address my cartboy argument.

I'm actually in corporate retail myself and my company (Mervyns) isn't doing anything different based on heating, etc - we've definitely ramped up advertising over the last 6 months, but everybody's been doing that. Maybe some retailers are banking on a soft 4th quarter, but we're pretty confident we're going to do some amazing sales. nod

[Edited 11/5/05 15:15pm]

i said there were 4,400 Walmart stores WORLDWIDE. and whether or not this number includes Sam's Marts doesn't matter much - i seriously doubt their employment and purchasing policies vary greatly from their parent company.

in reference to your "cartboy" comment (please accept my humblest apologies for not responding to all of your points to the level to which you seem to feel entitled), you actually have a point, in the sense that "cartboy" is not a long-term career. but do you feel similarly about customer service reps, or warehouse workers? should ANYBODY at Walmart make a living wage?

and, as a person who grew up very much working class, i believe that your dismissive way of talking about the people who serve you as a Walmart shopper does not reflect well on you.

Saying that cartboy shouldn't be a career is dismissive? You are just trying to take the moral highroad in this argument by making me looking bad to people who hadn't read my comments.

I am certainly not ashamed of this statement.

"Job for high school kids" ? Maybe so. But low-paying jobs are the ones you have to bust your ass at. The lower the pay, the harder you have to work. I'm talking about physical labour, not sitting on your ass at a computer all day. I worked for minimum wage as a dishwasher -which, btw, in my area does not constitute a living wage -and what did i get for it? I fucked up my already arthritic wrist and hand joints, and my marks in college dropped noticably, and because of the amount of work I was doing -over 40 hours a week -I gained 15 pounds of muscle but my body fat dropped far below a healthy number for a woman my age.

Now I work two jobs, also low-paying and labour-intensive -and may have to go out and get a third one.

Ideally jobs like these are only short term -I certainly don't plan on doing this my entire life -but "cartboys" and everyone else who has to work the shitty jobs most people think they're too good for damn well deserve benefits. There's more health risks in jobs like these than say, a CEO -so why shouldn't we?
