that's what I was thinking about them.....surely they can't work at all times.

Radar detectors have various limitations. One is that they're prone to false alarms, especially on the X band. (Automatic door openers are often the cause.) Most states no longer use X-band radar, so these alerts usually can be ignored. Unfortunately, I used to live in Indiana, one of the few states that was still using the X band.

Another is that there are other ways for the cops to detect your speed, such as pacing (i.e., the cop follows you and matches your speed) and VASCAR (where the cops calculate your speed by determing how long it took you to travel a set distance). A radar detector is useless against either one.

hmmm I didn't know that. I freeze up completely whenever cops get behind me.....and I know a lot of them delibertely do it.

How long do speeding tickets stay on your record? Does anybody know?

It depends upon the state (and sometimes the violation). Still, just because the ticket is off the "official driver's record" provided by the state doesn't mean that it magically disappears. When I submitted my application for admission to the Bar of Indiana, I had to disclose any tickets I'd ever received for non-parking offenses, even if they were off my official driver's records (and I had to submit copies of those records too).

The Washington State Bar Association also wanted to know about any tickets, although they didn't make me submit copies of my official driving records.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

I'm not sure either. I know that if points are taken away that it takes a year to get them back.

In Minnesota after however many years (can't remember the exact number) your tickets are supposed to be removed but it usually doesn't happen so its wise to contact the DOT and officially ask for them to be removed. My friends mom works for the DOT so she takes care of such things for us but she says typically they just sit there.
