Speed KILLS....I got a ticket :( I was just bragging the other day about how the officers must love me because I've had five warnings for speeding. Well my luck ran out this morning. Driving on my way to school, flying down the highway, running late as usual....busted. He clocked me at 75 in a 45 speed zone. I know I was speeding, but I don't think I was doing 75. Anyway, I knew he was writing a ticket this time instead of a warning, because it was taking him too long. That whole "I'm going to school" excuse didn't work this time, which I really was going to school. He called himself doing me a favor by reducing the points to two instead of four and the fine from $360 to $76.00. I mean it's a really big help and I thanked him for that because he said a 2 point ticket doesn't effect the cost of insurance, so that's good. It would've been even better if he had just given me a warning I got until the Dec. 12th to pay, so it's alright I guess.

30 over in Minnesota is reckless driving which is a MAJOR offense as far as insurance is concerned and basically you are screwed.
My serious advice is to slow down. Speeding isn't worth your life or worse yet someone else's life.

My serious advice is to slow down. Speeding isn't worth your life or worse yet someone else's life. well it should've been $360 and 4 points....and I can't afford to have that many points off because of an accident I was in earlier this year. So it's a pretty major offense here too....I just got cut a break. I don't speed delibertely, and I don't think many people do. It's just force of habit and when you have other things on your mind you tend to lose track of how fast you're going.....yeah I know still my fault I guess. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

they hate me edit [Edited 11/14/05 13:56pm] Ewwwww weee! Sorry to hear that... I got one ticket for speeding with the Brits to the Bay area..... Well deserved.. I think I clocked 100ish in an open area... he wrote it for like 70 and posed for pics with my traitor friends. THEN I got another for making a right turn in Sna Francisco on a red light. Which is allowed in Southern California and not there. The officer was an ass as he had run my plates and KNEW I didn't know the law there as he stated the difference to me as soon as he walked up and before I questioned him. I went to school for one and ate the other on my record.

A radar detector has probably saved me from getting pulled over at least once. However, if you nonetheless get stopped for speeding, a radar detector pretty much guarantees you'll be getting a ticket instead of a warning. The other annoying thing about radar detectors is that some states have turned old radar guns into unmanned "drones" for the sole purpose of setting off radar detectors. I have personal experience with this in Pennsylvania. Edit: Also note that while radar detectors are legal in most states, they are illegal in many Canadian provinces. One time when I went through Ontario on a drive from Maine to a wedding in Detroit, I actually FedEx'ed my radar detector to myself in Detroit. My serious advice is to slow down. Speeding isn't worth your life or worse yet someone else's life. 30 over may be a bit much, but speed limits are set artificially low. There is also research showing that drivers tend to ignore posted speed limits and drive at whatever speed seems safe, given the road and driving conditions. I must be lucky, as I've gotten three warnings, but never a ticket. Furthermore, they were all issued by separate police agencies, and at least in Indiana, where I got them all, warnings don't go beyond the records of issuing department, so none of the cops knew about my history. The last time I got caught, I got paced going 63 in a 45 construction zone by an unmarked car for several miles. I was sure I was going to get a double-fine ticket for that one. Instead, the cop just complimented me on my car and asked me to slow down a bit. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

My ex-wife, who is a teacher, got a ticket for speeding in the school zone in front of the school where she was teaching. Luckily for her, the ticketing officer made a note that she was a teacher, and the cop's supervisor was the "Officer Friendly" for the school. He called her up and offered to make the ticket disappear--it was an offer she gladly accepted. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Radar detectors have various limitations. One is that they're prone to false alarms, especially on the X band. (Automatic door openers are often the cause.) Most states no longer use X-band radar, so these alerts usually can be ignored. Unfortunately, I used to live in Indiana, one of the few states that was still using the X band. Another is that there are other ways for the cops to detect your speed, such as pacing (i.e., the cop follows you and matches your speed) and VASCAR (where the cops calculate your speed by determing how long it took you to travel a set distance). A radar detector is useless against either one. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |
