oh, eek boxed sorry, mr. insensitive strikes again!

new advice: get gussied up as glamorously as possible, go out to a club some night when it's really busy, find a good spot to stand at for a while, and spend the night IGNORING EVERYONE.

i swear, it's very theraputic.

Bad grammar and spelling really concerns me and I fear for the future of the English language.

I love this language you see, and I hate to see it tortured so.

The constant abuse it gets leads me to wonder if it's actually taught anymore.

There (their, they're) seems to be some confusion over certain words like to, too, and two, and when they should be used. It's not rocket science, it's basic English and when I was growing up everybody knew when each should be used by the age of six. What's changed ? Is it laziness or lack of education ?

The increasing popularity of the word 'like' as a substitute for 'said' deeply concerns me - 'I was like no way and she was like whatever', and having heard statements akin to this I was like Samuel L. Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction : 'English, motherfucker, do you speak it ?'.

I am also concerned by the following :

The use of 'been' instead of 'being'.

The use of 'I could care less' instead of 'I couldn't care less' - a small but very important difference. 'I couldn't care less' means I don't care about it, 'I could care less' means I do care about it but it would be possible for me to not care as much about it as I currently do. It's nice to see that the author of this thread knows the difference . smile

The trend of putting the words 'or whatever' on the end of a question or statement, for example 'Are you going to the gig, or whatever?'. If I reply 'Yes' you have no more information than you did before you asked, as you cannot possibly know whether I was responding to the 'gig' part or the 'or whatever' part of the question. In fact, I was responding to the 'or whatever' part, which I interpreted as 'or would you like to give me a swift kick in the balls'.

More whatever :

The use of 'whatever' as a reply. 'Whatever' is not (and never will be) a meaningful reply. 'Whatever' to me includes a little invisible postscript which reads 'I disagree with what you said but I am either too lazy to bother or lack the mental acuity to respond intelligently, and have instead decided to issue a one-word response which is as close as I can get to insulting you without putting any effort into it.'. I'd rather be told to fuck off than to be whatevered, so have some balls and tell me to fuck off instead.

The Txtification of English :
On the train last week I overheard a student saying 'Lol' (not 'ell oh ell' but 'Lol' as if Lol was a word). The mind boggles. I'm not a fan of Txt at the best of times - if you must turn everything into an acronym in order to fit your message into the allowable 256 characters, perhaps your time would be better spent using your phone for it's intended purpose to convey your message vocally to the intended recipient by way of the very useful 'make a phone call' feature, instead of engaging in a five minute thumb aerobic session.

I'd love to say I couldn't care less about these things because it occurs to me that caring about them is just another sign that I may be turning into a grumpy old man. The sad truth is I care deeply about them and therefore I could care considerably less, and I often fear that those of us who do care about these things are but a few lost voices in a sea of BTW's, WTF's, LOL's and Whatever's.

Do you care ?

No, I didn't think so. smile

The title of this thread is my theme for the week. Really. Hit me up with whatever concerns you may have. I will prove to you that I really just can't be bothered, and I will suggest ways in which you could care less as well.

I think I'm on to a self-help revolution here, so you should probably participate in this thread before I start charging money.

Well that's different, poor writing style isn't exclusive to those who don't know their grammar or spelling. If it was Dan Brown probably wouldn't be as popular as he is.

I'll tell you one thing that I really couldn't care less about (today anyway) - Work - as evidenced by the fact that I spent the best part of an hour writing all that guff, and it was immeasurably more interesting than what I'm supposed to be doing at the moment.

I’ll be finished in just under an hour – now that I do care about.

What’s the difference between ignorance and apathy ?

I don’t know and I don’t care.
