Question about the sex scene in Monsters Ball... What's up with the hand in the cage? The sex scene is the only part of the movie I saw so I don't know if it relates to something that happened earlier in the film. Anybody know? I've been wondering about this shit for the longest. | |

i personally stopped watching in the middle of the movie. I had to watch it again just to see the sex scene everyone was talking about.
the movie sucked and Halle really DID win an oscar the sex scene. the chubby kid was the best thing in the movie.  | |

I thought it was some attempt at symbolism - by fucking him, she was freeing herself. If I can recall, the hand darts out of the cage? I don't remember; I remember seeing it, though, and thinking, damn that's some heavy-handed shit. A pretty dumb move, if you ask me. It didn't fit the movie. | |

 It does sound very heavy-handed. A lot of directors and screenwriters don't trust their own ability to convey a message/feeling through subtle means. Or you could say that they don't trust their audience's ability to understand subtleties. Either way it's really unfortunate. | |
