is it such a big thing in other countries as well?

In Belgium it is. Everyone has a day off and a lot of festivities are organized. 11/11/11 is an organisation that goes from door to door on this day, selling beautiful postcards. The money goes to different kinds of projects.

there are a few people in my extended family and neighbors that lost their lives in WWII.
and one family friend that came home with shrapnel in his knee.
so to those men and all the others... thank you heart

my family has the agricultural exemption papers for each of my grandfathers from the first world war...
and in going through the papers at the farmhouse we have found tax papers where you were taxed 100% on income that was more than what you made before the war. the move was made to prevent profiteering during the war but for farmers that had made nothing during the depression it meant you continued to have very lean years. there were also war bond papers and the dairy ration papers. it was a very different time - and we must not forget the sacrifices made by everyone

I'm not going to retell the horrible stories of what happened to my (Jewish) family during WWII, as I'm going to bed to get rid off my throat-infection...

But keep this thread alive for at least a few hours. These wars have infected so many people's lives, and many people sacrificed their life for different reasons: going from stupid ideals to peace... No matter what these reasons were, too many people died.

And we should remember that from time to time.
