Then start climbing sweetheart...take on the added responsibility to move up that ladder...be the one who answers questions for others nod...look into whether or not they will train you to run things...(I used to work for Neiman Marcus---they had the training in Dallas, on a platter. nod )

You do have somewhere to go...UP...and when you get there will you give me a personal shopper at a discount? :megreen:

1. does this come in white? (do you SEE this in white?)

A lot of stores don't put everything they have on display. A lot of sizes and other versions of the product are stored away because of lack of space, but are still available to the customer upon request. I don't know how many times I've asked if they have something in a different colour or size and they've told me "let me check" and come back with what I was looking for. So the question does make sense.

2. do you carry ____? (after showing the product)...is this all you have?

See 1

3. can you have this napkin ring transferred from san diego to baltimore?

Why not? If the customer is ready to pay for it, a service-minded sales rep should be able to make it happen.

4. does this $5.99 crystal come in a nicer box?

Okay, that one's stupid.

5. do you have more in the back?

See 1

6. uhhhm..you know what i'm looking for?

This is just a rhethorical question to start up a conversation.

7. every saturday i come in here at 4 pm it's always long lines!

Just making conversation. If people feel like they can connect with the sales rep they're more likely to buy something.

...and oh, the thread title: "do you work here?"

I've asked that a gazillion times because very often it's not clear if the person in question works there or not. They have no particular uniform or nametag or anything else. How am I supposed to know for sure if I just see them walking through the store? I simply ask, of course.

shrug

falloff

You know, I was thinking mostly the same things. I think because I worked a few service jobs when I was younger, I have very high expectations of the service I should receive if a store/restaurant/what have you wants to keep my business.
That said, I know when you work a service job, many customers are just plain awful. So I can relate to the spirit of the post, if not the actual examples given. wink

Absolutely! My mom has worked in retail for many years and I can't believe how she was treated by some people. It was as if they thought she was a lower-class human being just because she was standing behind a counter. disbelief

I'm glad you see what I mean about the examples though. wink

cosign. also I love it when they say

"do you have this?" (proceed to show me something or describe it)
me: "uhm, I've never seen this in our store"
them: "well, I bought it here before"
me: "how long ago?"
them: "1 or 2 or 3 years ago..."

eek

My ex used to get that shit all the time at his bookstore job! "do you know that one book, where there's a man, and there's a woman, and they fall in love, but then something bad happens?" doh!

I do that at the video store all the time. You know the one with eddie murphy where he's the actor and he doesn't know he's in the movie! The guys working there live for that stuff, I swear! They ALWAYS know which one you mean, and off the tops of their heads know if it's out or in, worship

come work at my store--we need zippy, unaffected people such as yourself to come help these clueless morons. once you ask me "do you work here" while i'm holding a telxon gun, while on a ladder with a lanyard and name badge on, it's pretty much downhill from there, as i have already labeled you as brain dead. customer service isn't what it used to be--people will intentionally make a mess of things, leave merchandise all over the floor instead of putting back on the shelf, let their kids run amok while they shop, and just basically complain about anything that doesn't suit their frame of existence at that point in time.

every saturday i come in here at 4 pm it's always long lines!

This reminds me of my work. I work on the border between Mexico and Texas. On Saturdays and Sundays the line can be as much as a two hour wait. There are always people who think we are slow. The wait is two hours because everyone comes over at the same time. Plus, we have more important things to worry about than wait times.
