I learned to use one when I was about 12 but haven't really tried since. I can sew by hand (I used to make all my barbie's clothes!), but that's only good for small repairs and small touches and such. So if you've got any pointers, I'm all ears! Sewing machines can be very pricey. You can either get one at Target/Sears/Walmart/Costco/etc for a few hundred dollars or go whole hog and spend thousands for a really nice one at a sewing machine shop. I would go for the latter and spend a little more on a fabulous machine rather than buy a cheap one that you'll have problems with and will inevitably have to replace in a few years. But if you're not planning to sew all of the time and make a living off of it and it's going to be more of a fun, spare time sort of thing, then there's really no need to spend thousands upon thousands. Try to find an older, discontinued model or even look for open box specials. We sell Husqvarna and Viking, which are very old and reliable brands. But I must say that I love my Singer - probably 50+ years now and it still works like a charm. I would advise going to a specialty shop or fabric stores in your area and inquiring there. But beware, some do work on commission. Oh, and forget Coats & Clark thread - go for Güterman! It's so much better! good luck carrie! I mean, like, where is the sun?

I have some authors in mind and it's a topic that hasn't been written about a lot. I'm currently doing some reading and taking a lot of notes. This is a long term project. Doesn't anyone want to know what authors I have in mind! I'm interested!!

I'm probably not looking to spend a thousand, just yet anyway. But we will see... Yeah, my mom has a Singer that she's had probably just about her whole life. Still in wonderful working order. Se we'll see... |
