Terry McMillan confronts gay ex-husband
NEW YORK (AP) — Stella isn't happy about losing her groove. Terry McMillan appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show Wednesday to confront her gay ex-husband, Jonathan Plummer, who inspired McMillan's 1996 novel How Stella Got her Groove Back. The book, later adapted into a movie, chronicled the adventures of a 40-something woman who falls for a guy half her age.


McMillan filed for divorce in January after 6 1/2 years of marriage when she learned Plummer was gay.

"I always thought Jonathan was not the most masculine man that I had been with," the 54-year-old author told Winfrey. But she says she never suspected anything because "all men aren't masculine. He wasn't effeminate."

When Plummer joined McMillan on stage, she told him, "You didn't say anything about being gay. You said everything but that."

"I did expect her to be upset," Plummer said. He said he only realized he was gay in the final two years of the marriage.

The divorce was an ugly one with each having restraining orders filed on the other and Plummer suing for spousal support. The fallout led McMillan and others to conclude Plummer married only to get his U.S. citizenship — he's a native of Jamaica, where they met.

As to why he sued, Plummer refused to comment, saying he didn't want to "restir things right now."

But while the two argued during much of the show, questioning each other's account, they said they are now approaching reconcilement.

"I regret hurting her," said Plummer. "There are better ways to be doing this."

McMillan acknowledged, "I think that Jonathan did love me, because you can't fake this stuff."

Man, that ish was crazy. My wife said that Terry was acting more like a scorned mother than a scorned lover. She did appear quite teenagish, though.

And I agree with the other comments about dude looking gay as hell!! Anyway, Terry tried to make her ho into a housewife, and she even admitted that she didn't think it would "last forever". So why bother?

Oh yeah, what was up with that bath they took together after they broke up?

I think Terry was very HURT and its understandable. He actually may have treated her well and she needed his "softness". Possible. I'm glad the counselor chick told Terry to take a look at herself and why she bought into this crap.


and did you guys peep that Oprah has bought the rights to Terry's latest book. So that's how all of this happened.

Judging from brief articles I'd read, I wasn't sure what to expect from McMillian on this show, but she was fine. Mostly she just came off as hurt. A bit immature on the matter, but they both were. I'm just glad they don't have kids together, because then that would have made their behavior even more of a disappointment.

And that counselor chick is the best thing about Oprah's show. Her name is Robin Smith, and she's a psychotherapist. She's been on the show several times and she's always kind, encouraging and honest with her guests. Not that there needs to be another Oprah spinoff, but I am hoping she someday has a platform all her own. She's great.

I remember when she was doing the press junket for "Stella..." the book, and the stop she made in Miami for the book tour...I'll be damned if she wasn't the most arrogant, condescending author I had ever witnessed in front of an audience (which, by the way, was made up of women of color from 21-55 who were coming out to SUPPORT her!).In the question and answer portion of the presentation her manners and attitude toward the audience were atrocious. Everything from rolling her eyes to making grammaatical corrections of the nervously posed questions of adoring fans! To make matters more disappointing, her icy, superior demeanor didn't lessen after the talk when she did the book signing in the lobby, either. She carried herself as if people were there to pay for the priviledge of supporting her work and be subjected to snide comments and curt behavior. As much as I enjoy her work, I find her personalty a bit hard to swallow... If I was a man, straight or gay, I probably wouldn't want to live with her either

I think her demeanor is really just nervousness. I think its a nervous reaction to the situation. I just find her animated and a little insecure but not necessarily immature. BUT then again, i've never been in her presence so....

I'm not a huge fan of her work anyway.

IMO, Star Jones already knows the deal, which makes her situation more pathetic. She's so desperate to have a man and a fancy party she settles for a gay dude. And all that product placement at her "wedding" was sickening. I can't stand her fat ass. She's first, second & third on my celebrity "Must-Slap" list.

Howard Stern did a great bit on Star Beast. He played tapes of her walking down the aisle, and it was the thundering footsteps of the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. Sh!t had me rolling!
