Wait, I have 512 not 256. I was just wondering about my internet speed because when I do a test on my ISP's website the speed is usually around 450, but my internet when surfing is slow. Downloading from say NPGMC or getting a windows update is very speedy, but surfing is very slow. Also, my computer just doesn't like having lots of windows open and they don't even minimise or maximise properly. Opening Word or an application like that takes about 15 seconds. Is all this due to the lack of RAM? I turned the hardware acceleration off as I thought it might help, and removed all the superficial ornamentation of XP so that it's as basic looking as possible, but it's not really working any better. I was hoping it's all just because of the RAM. Do you think this is the case? Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I feel I'm wasting my money on the ADSL if my computer is still slow to work with. sigh

Yeah, increasing the RAM to at least 128MB would improve performance all around. The 64MB that you have is pretty much all being devoted just to run the Windows operating system, so using any programs is going to be ssssslllloooowwwww. RAM is pretty cheap if you only need to reach 512MB though. Check into used modules if possible. I've gotten a few through eBay and haven't been disappointed yet.

Cool. I've seen 512 at Phanthip Plaza where I go for all my electronics stuff for about 2800 baht, so that's about $70, is that about right?

Thanks for all your help. hug

I just rechecked the info about my computer and it says Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2, Celeron CPU 2.4GHz (2.42GHz), 96.0 MB of RAM, never feed after dark. eek

...

512 is plenty. 1 GB is preffered, but 512 will run it fine.

Try increasing your page file size. Right click my computer, (system properties), advanced, , settings, Advamced, Virtual Memory, Settings.

Try ensuring that your pagefile size is double your physical memory. Page file memory access time is painfully slow, but it'll allow you to run a few more programs at once.

honey, anything you do is ok with me--you know that. But your computer kind of sucks.

I've done that. Increased it to 200-1000, is that ok?

Breaks the common myth about the page file/penis size ratio though doesn't it? biggrin

That seems to be in the ballpark. I'm assuming it's PC133 or PC100 memory that you need, right?

Thanks for all your help. hug

No problem! biggrin

Make sure the type of memory you're getting works with your motherboard. If you're using 96MB of RAM, I'm guessing that it's probably PC100 or 133. You may be able to tell by looking at the sticks of RAM inside your system and see if they've been labelled as such. Otherwise, check out the motherboard model and look it up via the manufacturer's support website to see what types of memory are approved for your particular motherboard. Otherwise, fire me off an orgnote with as much info about your system that you can and I can research the info for you. biggrin

Thanks. I guess I could just ask them in the shop. I'll probably just take the thing in and get them to do it when I go to buy the RAM. Let's hope they actually know more than I do. You'd be surprised! lol

woot! That's awesome. Too bad you don't live closer, I would have you come take a look at this computer. Get the keyboard issue solved, get the memory upgraded, and I'd be one happy lady. cloud9
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
