My Computer Sucks........ not enough memory, so it freezes up, keyboard doesn't always work properly, etc. As soon as I get enough money saved up, I'm getting a new one, I've totally had it with this one! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Why not just have it update?
You can save some real money that way. Some new memory & a motherboard makes it a new machine. Replacing a keyboard is cheap. I got a frankenstein machine, and I will never buy a whole new computer again unless this one gets destroyed somehow. No More Haters on the Internet.

I got a frankenstein machine, and I will never buy a whole new computer again unless this one gets destroyed somehow. I've upgraded the memory on this machine several times. In fact, the last time I had more memory put into the computer, my computer guy told me that this was the last time the memory could be upgraded. I guess there's only so many spots where the memory 'stick' can be placed. I replaced the keyboard about a year ago, and I'm not too happy with it. I got a "cordless" keyboard and mouse, and I doubt that I ever would buy one again. The keyboard acts up a lot, and either does not type a letter even when I hit the key real hard, or it types the same letter about 5 times when it only gets pressed once. Think I need to call the company that makes the keyboard to get a replacement, I got a lemon. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

they make computers so you can only upgrade them to a point. I just uprgraded my old mac to a slightly less old mac that COULD be upgraded some more, this way I haven't paid an arm and a leg. I got a 1gB RAM!!!

I wish my computer would "suck". I'd never leave the house! When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I never knew that companies that make computers only make them so you can only upgrade to a certain point and that was it. But they're smart to do that, because then they know that they will get more money off of you when that happens, because they know you will have to pay good money for an new computer, motherboard, or something of that nature. Interesting how it all works. I'm glad that you got more RAM on your computer, that is extremely helpful! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Actually, motherboards that use DDR RAM are pretty versatile when it comes to memory. I just bought a new motherboard a month ago, and it can use PC2100, PC2700, and PC3200. Yeah, there are only so many slots that can hold RAM, but overdoing it isn't necessarily good, either. The motherboards are also dependent on the processor speed. Increase the technology of the processor, and you may have to upgrade to a better motherboard and faster RAM because the old equipment just isn't capable of handling the stresses put on them with the new parts. I don't think it's the case that they purposely cap off limits on the boards. It's just that new technology keeps pushing the envelope to better and more efficient components.

Now that DEFINITELY sucks. I remember when I used to have to use a computer at the library. There was an hour limit if there was someone waiting to get on the computer to use it, and you had to sign in. It was a real pain in the butt. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Oh, tell me about it!
I'm stupid, which is why I have this oddball Thai computer with 96MB of RAM (wtf???) and yet I'm running Windows XP Media Edition. It takes about 5 minutes to startup and can't handle having more than 2 internet explorer windows open at one time. I should just change my OS to 2000 or something for the time being until I buy more RAM. 512MB would do it, right?

A gig would be ideal just for the other programs you may want to run on it. XP's absolute minimum requirement is 64MB but recommends at least 128MB. I can't imagine running with only 64MB RAM!

I seem to recall the guy telling me that 512MB would be about the most I should put in. I don't want this Media Edition so I'm going to get the standard XP home edition and 512MB of RAM. I have 256Kbps ADSL so it all should run ok, right? What's up with 96MBs of RAM? Is that normal????

Try increasing your page file size. Right click my computer, (system properties), advanced, , settings, Advamced, Virtual Memory, Settings. Try ensuring that your pagefile size is double your physical memory. Page file memory access time is painfully slow, but it'll allow you to run a few more programs at once.

One 64MB module and a 32MB. It's very possible and even normal for a few years ago. Yeah, getting the Home Edition and running with 512MB should work pretty good. The DSL speed won't matter too much, but 256 is okay (it's what I have myself).

I was just wondering about my internet speed because when I do a test on my ISP's website the speed is usually around 450, but my internet when surfing is slow. Downloading from say NPGMC or getting a windows update is very speedy, but surfing is very slow. Also, my computer just doesn't like having lots of windows open and they don't even minimise or maximise properly. Opening Word or an application like that takes about 15 seconds. Is all this due to the lack of RAM? I turned the hardware acceleration off as I thought it might help, and removed all the superficial ornamentation of XP so that it's as basic looking as possible, but it's not really working any better. I was hoping it's all just because of the RAM. Do you think this is the case? Sorry for all the questions, it's just that I feel I'm wasting my money on the ADSL if my computer is still slow to work with.

Yeah, increasing the RAM to at least 128MB would improve performance all around. The 64MB that you have is pretty much all being devoted just to run the Windows operating system, so using any programs is going to be ssssslllloooowwwww. RAM is pretty cheap if you only need to reach 512MB though. Check into used modules if possible. I've gotten a few through eBay and haven't been disappointed yet.
