Buy a star, but it's not yours.

http://www.wired.com/news...45,00.html

It sounds great, but....is it a con? It seems so.

Has anyone done this?

I was actually thinking of doing that for the anniversary of a friend who passed away - it was 10 years in October and I wanted to do it for his family but I didn't have the money

now I'm kinda glad I didn't if it wasn't legit... it's sad sad

I thought it was obvious to everyone that they don't actually name the star in any legally binding way. That would be like selling something you don't own.

I think it's a romantic gesture though, and that's all it was meant to be in the first place.

I could name a star all by myself. Just download something off the internet. Create a certificate online. Who would know the difference.

Yes, In theory it seems great, but it's just another way of selling you something that you will never own.

It is a nice gesture of course, but an empty one. Most people know you cant "buy" a star, but they still need to make this clearer. imo.

I agree wink Astronomers name them but that's as far as it goes, nobody owns them so to speak, so they cant be sold.

Number23

Isn't 'owning' land on Earth just as ludicrous? Who's selling it? Who's profiting? Why do we continue to be bent over and buggered by vampric institutions and cancerous hierarchies, all obviously absurd?

"Yet this tacit acknowledgement hasn't stopped ISR from throwing its weight around. In 2000, they threatened to sue Ohio Wesleyan University for hosting a student's Web page criticizing the company's star-naming practices. Rather than face a lawsuit, the university removed the website. At roughly the same time, ISR threatened suit against a Florida planetarium for remarks against ISR made by one of its employees."

you naysayers better watch out! eek
