Eight-year-old girl bags Md. season's first bear
Two shots drop 211-pound adult male this morning, DNR official says

OAKLAND // An 8-year-old girl bagged the first black bear of Maryland's 2005 season today, downing the 211-pound adult male with two shots from a .243-caliber rifle about an hour after dawn, the Department of Natural Resources said.

Sierra Stiles, of Kitzmiller, was hunting on her family's farm in southern Garrett County, said Paul Peditto, director of the DNR's Wildlife and Heritage Division.

Maryland law sets no minimum age limit for hunters, but anyone applying for their first license after July 1, 1977, must pass a hunter education course and show that they can safely handle and shoot a firearm. Peditto said Sierra scored 98 percent on her hunter safety test.

"This particular young lady, by her actions and words, had accomplished the objectives of a hunter, no matter what age. She demonstrated a safe, responsible, knowledgeable and dedicated approach to this activity," he said.

Hers was one of six bears registered by 5 p.m. today. State wildlife managers have set a quota of 40 to 55 bears for the hunt, which runs through Saturday.

The saddest thing I saw when I worked for the police was when a 7 yo accidentally shot his 5 yo brother with a shotgun.

His father had them laid out in the house getting them ready to go hunting.

sad
I'm firmly planted in denial

at least she knows what she's doing and is a pretty good shot to boot.

that being said, i'm certainly not all that comfortable with the idea of a child handling a gun. i dont even like the idea that adults have them.

That sounds like instant karma, if you ask me. Not sad at all.

Well, I wouldn't have wanted to go hunting at 7 years old.

01. No it isn't;
02. Yes they did.

Teaching a child to slaughter animals for pleasure is nothing short of child-abuse. I think that premature death is possibly the best thing that could have happened to that child because it would only have grown up to become a psychotic cunt in adulthood.

The hunter becoming the hunted is divine retribution.
