Me and Amy made these costumes out of cardboard, duct tape, glue, and fabric. It took us a few weeks and at the end I thought they turned out fantastic. I mounted little speakers inside mine and downloaded some Pacman sounds to my mp3 player so you could hear the whomp whomp sound coming from me.

We also spent a lot of time and energy finding the right shoes and Amy made us the shirts and coverted kids tights into something I could wear. All in all we spent a lot of time, energy and money making these Pacmans.

We did all this to enter a Halloween costume contest at a local casino who were giving away $6,000 in prizes including $1,500 to the winner.

We were so excited leading up to the contest because we felt that we had a legitimate chance to place very well. But it seems that the fix may have been in as we didn't even advance to the second round when such costumes as 3 guys wearing fake moustaches and calling themselves "The molesters" advanced or a guy in a Michael Jackson mask with a doll attached to his crotch or a guy in a Vikings jersey with a lifejacket and other such tacky costumes were apparantly better then ours. The guy who finished third ($1,000) wore the same costume as last year where he also won money with the same judges. Hmmm...

We were basically crushed when we were eliminated as it never occured to us that we wouldn't advance to the second round. I mean we had invested a lot into making them and were emotionally invested. Even today I still feel a little sad, but I guess we can be proud with how well they turned out. We are going to save them and try to wear them in a different contest next year.

You should have gone to First Ave. for the costume contest. You would have placed for sure. They seem to judge honestly, and the people who put the most work into their costumes and have a lot of originality always seem to place and/or win. AND they always love big fuzzy things as well.

I appreciate all the nice things everyone is saying and I was kind of wondering if what Superspaceboy said might be correct myself. But if that is true its a tough way to lose by making something too nice.

As for Ufoclub. I had to borrow my Aunts minivan and take the seats out to transport them as they are rigid cardboard - i glued two pieces together for each segment to make it stronger - and they are quite big.

I should also add that I don't even think we should have won first place. There was a working Ipod costume that if it was homemade it was the greatest thing in the history of the world. The screen lit up and it played music LOUDLY through car speakers and working oversized headphones on a different woman. . It was so good I still kind of wonder if it is like a mascot for the Apple store in the Mall of America. If I were a judge I would have asked them if they built it and if they said yes I would have said the contest is over. When they won 4th the judges were booed.

But second place was still $1,200 and past that I can't believe we didn't even make it past the preliminaries.

you guys should have definitely won! those costumes are wonderful! you two obviously obviously put a lot of time, effort and creativity into making them, and i'm sorry the contest went down the way it did. it wasn't fair at all.

as already stated on this thread, at least be very proud of what a great job you two did.

try again next year, and hopefully next year there will be judges who recognize originality and effort.

(i really like that idea of putting the little speakers in your costume so as to have the Pac-Man sounds coming from you! i wish i could've seen you guys in RL in those outfits. )
